Calgary Fire Department maintains international accreditation

The Calgary Fire Department has once again received accreditation from the Commission on Fire Accreditation International (CFAI), proving it remains an international leader. Since first achieving accreditation 15 years ago, the Calgary Fire Department has continually demonstrated it operates above professional standards to provide excellent emergency services to the community.

In 1999, the Calgary Fire Department became the first Canadian fire service to receive the five-year accreditation with CFAI and is one of only seven Canadian fire departments to have received this prestigious designation. The CFAI, which offers education and credentialing services for first responder and fire service professionals and agencies, accredited the Calgary Fire Department in 2004, 2009, and now again in 2014.

“The Calgary Fire Department’s vision is to be an international fire service leader, and maintaining accredited status is one way we can measure this success,” said Calgary Fire Chief Ken Uzeloc. “This significant achievement would not be possible without the dedication and hard work of all our employees. I’m very proud of everyone’s dedication to both the community and to working towards and exceeding professional benchmarks.”

During its review, CFAI assessed the Calgary Fire Department on over 250 performance indicators and core competencies. The CFAI also congratulated the Calgary Fire Department for its many best practices. 

Not only does accreditation help the Calgary Fire Department identify and develop best practices and assess the fire risks and safety needs of the city, it also provides information for budgeting and business planning. 

“We are proud to serve our community and we work hard every day to earn the public’s confidence in our fire and emergency response services. Achieving accreditation is one way to reassure Calgarians that their Fire Department operates professionally and efficiently,” said Fire Chief Uzeloc.

The Calgary Fire Department regularly conducts reviews, audits and evaluations, not only to gauge its efficiency, effectiveness and quality of service, but to continually look for ways to improve and ensure citizens receive the best service.
