Basement Fire in Forest Lawn 6-Plex

On November 2nd, 2023 at approximately 8:50 PM the Calgary Fire Department (CFD) responded to a 911 call for a fire in a multi-family occupancy in the southeast community of Forest Lawn.  On arrival at the 1400 block of 44th street southeast, crews were met by neighbors who directed the engine into the rear of a 6-plex.  Firefighters found large volumes of smoke and flames pouring from the basement window of one unit with flames spreading to the exterior of the dwelling.

Fire crews immediately began fighting the fire from the exterior before moving inside.  Once inside, the fire was quickly brought under control and search of the occupancy began.  Crews quickly located one adult female occupant that was unconscious and rescued her from the occupancy.  Fire and EMS crews worked to resuscitate the occupant and she was transported to hospital.  Adjacent units were evacuated of all occupants as the fire was extinguished.

Firefighters remain on scene overhauling hot spots and working to reoccupy adjacent units.  The cause of the fire at this time is under investigation and crews will remain on scene through the night.

The Calgary Fire Department reminds Calgarians that working smoke alarms save lives and that every household should have a home escape plan.
