Calgary Fire Department Responds to Church Fire

At approximately 7:20 PM on Sunday July 4th, the Calgary Fire Department (CFD) responded to multiple 911 calls in the southeast community of Forest Lawn for a building on fire. On arrival at the 4900 block of Forego Avenue fire crews found large volumes of smoke and fire issuing from a 2 story church. Crews quickly deployed hose lines and brought the fire under control while gaining access to the interior of the building. Once inside, firefighters continued extinguishing small interior fires and conducted a search for occupants. On scene crews determined that the church was clear of occupants and were able to vent smoke from the interior.

Calgary Police Service (CPS) is on scene assisting with control of the perimeter and both Atco and Enmax assisted with deactivating utilities. Damage to the building is most extensive on the exterior with smoke damage on the interior. CFD investigators and the CPS Arson Unit are working at the site determining the cause of the fire. Firefighters will be on scene for several hours assisting with investigation.
