Calgary fire crews battle chimney fire in Deer Run

At approximately 10:50 on Friday morning , April 26th, 2024, Calgary fire crews were dispatched to a single family residence on Deer Park Place for reports of a  house fire. On arrival, flames and smoke were seen coming from the roof and chimney area of the home.  Firefighters quickly knocked down the fire and continue to search for and put out hot spots in the attic and around the chimney.  There is smoke and fire damage to the bedroom closest to the origin of the fire, as well as to the chimney, attic and roof area.  Two residents who were home at the time escaped without injury. Two pets were also in the home at the time of the fire; a hamster who was safely removed, and a cat  which is hiding and being searched for.

Enmax and ATCO were called to the scene to disconnect utilities  and  ‘fire watch’ will be implemented when most of the fire crews leave the scene.  A fire investigator is at the scene to determine the exact origin and cause. This fire is not being considered suspicious. No injuries  to civilians or firefighters were reported.

A smoke alarm activated and alerted the residents to the fire prompting them to evacuate the home and call 9-1-1.

Working smoke alarms save lives by alerting occupants to harmful smoke and can reduce your risk of dying in a home fire.

The toxic effects of inhaled smoke can overwhelm occupants before they can escape or even wake up from sleep. When properly installed, tested and maintained, smoke alarms are the best early warning system in the event of a home fire.

In a typical home fire, you may have as little as two minutes to escape from the time the smoke alarm sounds. Knowing how to use those minutes can make a lifesaving difference.

A home escape plan contains the layout of your home, the escape routes that should be used, and where to meet once you are outside. It is important to create and practice an escape plan with everyone who lives in your home so that they know what to do if there is a fire.

If one of your escape routes has you going out a second or third story window, then you should have a home escape ladder.
