Calgary Fire Crews Attend Fire at North East Strip Mall

At approximately 3:00 this morning, the Calgary Fire Department responded to a structure fire in the 7100 block of 81 Ave NE. Initial responding crews arrived at the retail strip mall to find visible smoke and flames showing from the end unit of the complex. A second alarm was immediately called to provide additional apparatus and crews to support the firefighting efforts. Aerial ladder trucks were positioned as water towers around the strip mall to surround the buildings and protect nearby multiunit resident structures. High capacity fans were used to pressurize adjacent bays to the source bay, to prevent fire spread within the structure. Local traffic was not impacted in the area. ATCO and Enmax were on scene to shut down gas and power to the building. Crews remain on scene at this time dealing with hot spots and flare ups. The fire investigator is also on scene, but the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
