Calgary Police Chief Rick Hanson announces retirement

Calgary (February 25, 2015) – CALGARY – Calgary Police Chief Rick Hanson announced today that he will retire effective March 13, 2015.  Chief Hanson joined the Calgary Police Service in 1975 and served 7 ½ years as Chief.

“The Commission was very sorry to learn of Chief Hanson’s retirement,” said Calgary Police Commission Chairman Rodney Fong.  “The Chief has our respect and admiration, our best wishes and most of all our deepest gratitude. His commitment to the betterment of the Calgary Police Service and the City of Calgary has been unparalleled.”

Chief Hanson led a new approach to policing in Calgary based on a continuum of services.  Rather than focusing solely on traditional enforcement techniques, he championed a pro-active approach and focused on prevention and intervention.  The results of this approach were and continue to be extremely positive. Important linkages between community services and the Calgary Police have been created and resulted in decreased crime rates, a 97% citizen satisfaction rate with policing services, and the development of several successful youth programs.  Positive partnerships forged under his leadership with community services including homeless organizations, domestic violence groups and education advocates are too numerous to list.

“His will be big shoes to fill,” says Fong.  That will be our next priority.  The Calgary Police Commission oversees the Calgary Police Service and will be responsible for selecting the next Chief.  Next steps in this process will be communicated at a later date.
