Calgary Fire Department issues Fire Safety Advisory

Due to recent dry conditions, the Calgary Fire Department (CFD) has issued a Fire Safety Advisory for the city of Calgary. The CFD is advising residents to be cautious when barbequing or using any outdoor open flames, and especially when disposing of smoking materials.

“We want to prevent grass fires, which can lead to damaging family homes and causing injury,” said Ed Kujat, Fire Marshal with the Calgary Fire Department. “This is the time of year when our city experiences dry conditions, which are perfect for grass fires to ignite and quickly spread. We are asking for residents to assist us in preventing these fires by using extreme caution and limiting their use of any outdoor flames and when disposing of their smoking materials.”

Citizens are asked to be particularly vigilant in vulnerable areas, such as natural growth parks and green spaces with dry grasses and shrubs.

Calgarians are asked to dispose of their smoking materials in proper designated ashtrays. As well, limit fires to designated or approved fire pits according to the bylaw. As always, please keep matches and lighters safely out of the reach of children.

CFD is aware of the Environment Canada forecast for precipitation this weekend.  As weather conditions and the fire risks change, the CFD will update the status of the Fire Safety Advisory.

Other southern Alberta municipal districts have recently declared fire bans or fire hazard warnings. If you are travelling outside of Calgary, please check with the local municipality.
