Find your purpose: the Calgary Fire Department seeks qualified, community-minded applicants for its annual recruitment intake
The Calgary Fire Department (CFD) is opening its annual application process for firefighter recruits. Anyone who meets the minimum requirements, is ready for a life of service to the community and is committed to fitness and teamwork, is encouraged to apply online from June 1-30, 2026.
“Calgary firefighters are highly motivated and compassionate people who have a passion for public safety and helping others when they need it most,” says Kristin Boisjoli, Recruitment Coordinator. “We serve a fast-growing and diverse city, and we’re searching for recruits who represent our values of Pride, Professionalism, Teamwork and Respect.”
Calgary firefighters respond to a variety of calls, including fires, emergency medical incidents, motor vehicle collisions, and other emergencies. They also are very present in the community and can be seen at many public events, building community connections and promoting fire safety. As part of their career development, firefighters can specialize in technical rescue, aquatic rescue and hazardous materials.
The CFD anticipates hiring 120-150 probationary firefighters from this posting.
Last year, the Calgary Fire Department received over 2700 recruit applications while graduating 119 new probationary firefighters. With nearly 1700 firefighters on staff by the end of 2026, CFD expects to grow significantly during the next four years to keep up with one of Canada’s fastest-growing municipalities.
In 1999, CFD became the first Canadian fire service to receive accreditation status with the Commission on Fire Accreditation International, making them part of one per cent of fire agencies in North America to have achieved this status so far.
“CFD firefighters are held to a high standard by the organization and the citizens of Calgary. They are community members themselves reflecting the city we serve, adding value to the service to the citizens of Calgary through varied backgrounds, experiences and skills,” says Fire Chief Steve Dongworth.
“In many ways, firefighters are ordinary people who are trained to do extra-ordinary things,” says Chief Dongworth. “If you are considering a career in the fire service, know that it’s not always easy but it’s certainly rewarding and full of purpose.”

Candidates don’t need to live in Calgary to participate in the recruitment process either. On May 26, CFD is hosting a virtual information session at 6pm -8pm.
