Calgary Fire Crews Respond to Multiple Fire Incidents
Fire crews respond to three separate fire incidents in cold weather conditions
At around 4:50am fire crews were dispatched to the 100 block of Martinvalley ME NE for a vehicle fire. CPS arrived on scene and blocked traffic to the alley behind the home. Fire crews arrived and observed heavy smoke and flames from a large cargo van on fire in the alley. Calgary Transit also called in the incident. The incident was upgraded to a structure fire due to proximity to homes and the light rail transit (LRT) tracks behind the home. Fire crews stretched a hose line and quickly knocked down the fire, keeping the fire isolated to the vehicle. No injuries were reported, and no other property was damaged. A fire investigator attended the incident and reported that there were multiple heaters in the back of van, likely being used to keep contents from freezing, and are investigating further.
Around 8:05am fire crews responded to a vehicle fire on Nose Hill DR NW in between Stoney Trail and 87 ST NW. On arrival fire crews found a City of Calgary Transit shuttle bus on fire. The driver met with crews and stated that they were the only person on board, and they had used the on-board fire extinguisher to attempt to extinguish. Fire crews used a hose line and on-board water from the fire engine and a tender truck to extinguish the fire. The driver was assessed by EHS and transported with non-life-threatening injuries. CPS assisted with traffic control when the road was temporarily closed. Cause is unknown and bus will be towed. As a result of cold temperature conditions, a sanding truck was requested as there is significant ice buildup from the water used to extinguisher the fire.
At approximately 8:10am fire crews responded to the 2900 block of 58 AV SE for an outside fire. On arrival fire crews saw flames and smoke at the bottom of the embankment behind a commercial business. Fire crews needed to cut a section of chain link fence in order to access the area then stretched a hose line and knocked down the fire. Crews found two patients who were alert and conscious and began initial medical assessments. A second fire engine was called to assist with patient care while crews worked to extinguish the fire prior to EHS arrival. Two ambulances attended and patient care was transferred on their arrival. Both patients were transported by EHS. Fire crews found an encampment with various items including a generator, propane tanks and gas cans. A fire investigator attended the scene and believed that the fire was caused by a heater inside of a tent that the patients were sleeping in.
