Update: 17 Avenue and 14 Street S.W. due utility repair and road restrictions

On Thursday, April 11, 2013 Water crews were conducting a routine video inspection of a sanitary main located at 17 Avenue and 14 A Street S.W. Upon inspection, a large void was discovered, indicating a break in the sanitary main. An emergency work plan was developed to minimize both traffic and water services impacts to citizens, while making the necessary repairs as quickly as possible.

 

Excavation began Saturday morning (April 13) exposing the infrastructure in the area. It was discovered that the scale of repair needed to be increased substantially as there are three pipes - a  600mm storm main, 100mm water main and a 200mm sanitary main - that required repair.

 

The cast iron water main, installed in 1910, will have a 7 metre portion replaced with PVC pipe. Both the storm main and sanitary main are old clay tile pipe. The sections exposed are cracked and broken. These sections will be removed and replaced with PVC pipe as well.  

 

Water Services crews are currently repairing all three mains and anticipate completion sometime in the afternoon Tuesday, April 16 barring any unforeseen circumstances. Once the utilities are repaired, there will be the backfilling process and road pavement. 17 Ave will remain fully closed until that time.

 

Currently one house, one business and one four-storey apartment building are out of water. Water Services has provided a water wagon as well as pool passes to impacted residents.

 

Alternate routes are 15 Street to 16 Ave SW. Major delays are expected and motorist are advised to consider alternate routes.

 

The City has positioned "variable message boards" with the following information: 

 

- northbound Crowchild Trail motorists are being advised to use 33 Avenue or Bow Trail

- on southbound Crowchild Trail, south of Bow Trail, motorists are being asked to use 33 Avenue S.W. 

- motorists on southbound Crowchild Trail at Kensington Road are being asked to use Bow Trail or Memorial Drive.
