Operation Silent Night helps lower vehicle noise levels on 17 Avenue S.W.

Noise monitoring data shows measurable reduction in loud vehicle activity during targeted enforcement initiative

A data-driven approach to reducing excessive vehicle noise is delivering results on one of Calgary's busiest corridors. Noise monitoring data collected during Operation Silent Night shows measurable improvements in sound levels and a reduction in loud vehicle activity along 17 Avenue S.W., an area identified as Calgary's highest-priority vehicle noise hot spot.

To evaluate the impact of the initiative, The City analyzed data from a noise monitor near Tomkins Park and compared results from the August 2026 enforcement period with the same period in 2025. The findings show a significant reduction in loud vehicle events and overall noise levels.

During enforcement hours, loud vehicle events decreased from 357 events in 2025 to 267 events in 2026, a reduction of 25.2 per cent. Across the full analysis period, loud vehicle events decreased from 801 to 715, a reduction of 10.7 per cent. Average sound levels during enforcement hours also fell from 71.18 dBA to 68.80 dBA, a decrease of 2.38 decibels.

“The results show that when drivers understand the rules and see a visible enforcement presence, we can make a meaningful difference in reducing excessive vehicle noise and improving the quality of life for residents and businesses,” said Brad Johnson, Inspector and head of the Traffic Safety Team.

The strongest reductions were observed during active enforcement periods, suggesting a positive impact from increased awareness and officer presence. While factors such as weather, traffic volumes and special events can influence sound levels, the monitoring data indicates a clear improvement during the operation period.

The results also highlight the value of Calgary's citywide noise-monitoring network. The monitors provide objective information about loud vehicle activity, helping The City identify noise hot spots, understand trends and evaluate the effectiveness of initiatives aimed at improving community livability.

Operation Silent Night demonstrates how data, technology and targeted enforcement can work together to reduce excessive vehicle noise and support quieter, more enjoyable public spaces for residents, businesses and visitors.
