City of Calgary ready for the winter season
As Calgary prepares for the return of winter weather, The City is ready to respond with crews, equipment and a Council-approved priority snow plan designed to keep people moving safely. New high-capacity snow-clearing equipment has been added to the fleet this season, helping crews clear high-priority roadways and support efficient winter maintenance operations.
“Calgarians can be assured that crews and contractors are ready 24 hours a day, seven days a week throughout the winter,” said Chris Hewitt, Manager of Mobility Maintenance.
“The City of Calgary is continually exploring ways to improve winter maintenance operations. This year, we will trial a new wing plow that can clear multiple lanes in a single pass, allowing crews to clear roads more efficiently and helping Calgarians get where they need to go safely after a snowfall."
Following a snowfall, the snow clock officially begins. Crews focus on following our Council approved Priority Snow Plan, outlined in the City’s Winter Maintenance policy.
Calgary's busiest routes are cleared first, including roads such as Glenmore Trail, Macleod Trail and Memorial Drive, along with City-owned sidewalks, priority pathways and pedestrian overpasses. Major transit and residential routes are our next priority as crews continue to work through the snow clearing priority network.
“Now is the time for Calgarians to prepare for changing conditions as we expect winter weather ahead,” said Hewitt. “When snow arrives, slow down, leave extra space between vehicles and give snow-clearing equipment plenty of room to work.”
Calgarians should also ensure their vehicles are winter-ready, with topped-up fluids, a brush or scraper, and have an emergency kit on hand. Before travelling, clear snow from your vehicle and dress appropriately for the conditions whether you're walking, wheeling, cycling or driving.
