Temporary closure of Devonian Gardens

To complete needed repair work in time for the busy winter season, Devonian Gardens will be temporarily closing to the public. The closure is scheduled to start on July 18, after The Calgary Stampede, and is anticipated to re-open before year end.

The decision to close was made jointly by The City of Calgary and 20 VIC Management Inc., property managers for The CORE.

“We have some warranty issues in our planter beds,” says Doug Marter, manager of Capital Development for Calgary Parks. “Additionally, The CORE has some lifecycle and maintenance work that needs to be completed. We have opted for a full closure to allow us to work more quickly and nimbly rather than a longer partial closure through the winter.”

The work on the planter beds is related to issues stemming from the park redevelopment. It is being conducted under warranty. The City will be honouring all current bookings in the park as there is no work planned on the east side where private events are held. During construction the trees and plants that need to be moved will be stored on-site for replanting. The Koi fish will remain in the park ponds undisturbed by work in the gardens.

“Devonian Gardens is a valued part of The CORE,” says Domenic Mazzocchi, spokesperson for 20 VIC Management Inc. “We feel it is important to complete this work as quickly and efficiently as possible so that it can reopen for Calgarians this winter.”

Devonian Gardens is a large indoor public park and botanical garden located downtown on the top floor of the CORE retail complex. The gardens include a living wall, Koi ponds, a children’s play area, meeting / functions spaces for special events, and over 550 trees of 18 different species.
