City acknowledges community tributes honouring Parker Wells
Our thoughts remain with the family and all those impacted by the tragic death of Parker Wells. The City of Calgary recognizes the many ways community members continue to honour and remember Parker.
The tributes that have been created in the days and weeks since Parker's passing reflect the care, compassion and sense of community that many have felt in response to this tragedy.
"We understand the desire to remember Parker and the importance these tributes hold for many people," said Doug Morgan, Chief Operating Officer – City Services. "We recognize that everyone grieves differently and that these memorials were created with heartfelt intentions."
The City manages memorials in accordance with its internal processes and any applicable bylaws. Temporary memorial items such as flowers, cards and stuffed animals left in parks are typically maintained for a short period before being respectfully removed and, where appropriate, offered to the family. Because these items are exposed to weather and environmental conditions, they can deteriorate over time and create maintenance and safety concerns. Other tributes, if defined as graffiti under The City’s bylaws, are removed in accordance with established processes.
Although Administration understands the intent behind the Parker tributes, they have been removed in accordance with established operating practices. Their removal does not diminish the significance of his memory or the community’s desire to honour him. As stewards of public spaces across Calgary, The City has a responsibility to approach these situations consistently and fairly, while ensuring that everyone affected by this tragedy is treated with compassion, dignity and respect.
Prior to the removal, those most directly affected were notified and expressed no concerns.
While temporary memorials can provide an important outlet for community grief in the immediate aftermath of a loss, permanent memorials offer an enduring way to honour and remember someone over time.

"While the methods used to honour Parker may vary, the compassion and care behind them are clear," said Morgan. "We will continue to approach this situation with respect for those grieving while applying our responsibilities fairly and consistently."
