City of Calgary Opens 5 Street Cycle Track Pilot

The 5 Street portion of the cycle track network pilot project, from 3 Avenue south to 17 Avenue south, will be open to the public the morning of Friday, June 12, 2015.

“After the early opening of the 12 Avenue cycle track pilot, we are pleased that the weather has continued to cooperate and allow us to complete the work on the 5 Street portion of the cycle track pilot early as well,” said Tom Thivener, Projects Coordinator. “The opening of 5 Street allows people who are cycling on 12 Avenue to have a north/south route as well so they can connect to destinations in and around downtown.”

Work will be completed on the pilot track today, allowing people to begin using the track tomorrow morning. The 8 and 9 Avenue cycle track pilot routes are still under construction, so we remind cyclists to stay off those routes until construction is complete. The remaining tracks are expected to open by the end of the month.

“We have seen a high number of people using the 12 Avenue track so far, with minimal traffic delays. On opening day, an average of 893 trips were made by bike in a 16-hour count in the middle of the route, and an average of 854 trips were made last week from Tuesday to Sunday. We hope to see this momentum continue with the opening of the 5 Street route.”

The City appreciates your patience throughout construction of the pilot project and while we all adapt to the new roadway. Please remember to watch for new signs, signals and pavement markings. Be understanding and courteous to one another as we all get used to the changes on the roadway.

We want to hear from you on how things are working. Whether you drive, walk or cycle, please contact 311 with your questions and feedback.
