Calgary Transit will provide Sunday level of service on Labour Day, Monday, Sept. 5. For more information on fares, schedules and service changes, please visit calgarytransit.com.

Parts of 9 Avenue downtown will be closed due to the Calgary Pride Parade on Sunday, Sept. 4, and some bus routes will be affected. Visit calgarytransit.com/CTrain-service for information on these detours

The Red Line will also be closed for scheduled maintenance and repair work between Chinook and City Hall Stations from Sept. 3 to 5. Shuttle buses will replace train service between the stations. 

The shuttle will also run on a detour route due to the parade on Sunday. Customers travelling northbound on the Red Line will disembark the shuttle at 4 Street or 8 Street Stations to transfer to the CTrain, instead of travelling directly to City Hall Station. City Hall Station can still be accessed via CTrain.

The eastbound traffic lanes on Memorial Drive between 9 Street N.W. and 4 Street N.E. will be closed to traffic Sept. 3 to Sept. 5. This closure is to allow Calgarians to walk and wheel on the roadway when adjacent pathways are expected to be busy.

New Year’s Eve fireworks!

Welcome in 2022 with fireworks! Everyone is invited to celebrate by watching the livestream of a midnight fireworks show over the Calgary Tower at Calgary.ca/NYE, with a synchronized CJSW 90.9 FM music soundtrack.

The fireworks show will be atop the iconic Calgary Tower. If you don’t have a view of the Calgary Tower, please watch and listen to the livestream featuring a blessing from a local Indigenous Elder, the countdown to midnight with Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek and the main event – a spectacular fireworks show with music soundtrack broadcast on CJSW 90.9FM.

We recommend tuning in at 11:55 p.m. on December 31, 2021.

With funding from the Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities, Calgary Recreation has been hosting junior adaptive golf lessons at the Shaganappi Point Golf Course and the McCall Lake Golf Course. Starting in July as a pilot project, these lessons have been free of charge for children with various disabilities and participation is organized through foundations such as Cerebral Palsy Kids and Families, Alberta Sports and Recreation for the Blind, Autism Aspergers Friendship Society of Calgary and Ups & Downs.

Classes are taught by pros from the National Golf Academy and feature five lessons on the driving range and putting green with the opportunity to play on the McCall Lake Par 3 course. The instructors adapt both equipment and techniques to suit any abilities. The classes are on greens that can accommodate wheelchairs and offer longer class times and brightly-coloured golf balls that are easily visible, ensuring participation for children of all physical and developmental abilities.

“We are constantly learning and adapting every golfer’s needs when working with people of all ages, levels and abilities,” says Gennie Liu, Recreation Program Specialist with Calgary Recreation, “We have worked with each disability group to understand participant abilities, possible adaptations and tips to make it inclusive and accessible for all.”

The junior adapted golf programs have been very successful and are expected to be held again in Summer 2022.

“I know Calgarians have been looking forward to the return of a car share service,” said Mayor Naheed Nenshi. “Communauto FLEX will provide an affordable and convenient option, strengthening Calgary’s transportation network so individuals and families can get where they need to go.”

Starting today, an initial fleet of 150 cars will be deployed in an area covering 26 square kilometres from 50 Avenue S.W. to 21 Avenue N.W., and from 37 Street S.W. to 17 Street S.E. The launch of the service was made possible by City Council’s approval of the revised Carshare Parking Policies and Traffic Bylaw earlier this year. “A new three-tiered pricing structure was implemented for operators who want to offer one-way carshare trips. This offers predictability and flexibility for carshare companies due to their unique operating model,” says Eric MacNaughton, Senior Transportation Engineer.

Tiered pricing for on-street parking

• Tier 1: The $450 fee per year, per car, for Tier 1 is unchanged from The City’s current policy and allows carshare operators to park vehicles in unpaid and residential permit spaces. Tier 1 does not include the downtown core.
• Tier 2: costs $840 per year, per car, includes parking in residential, unmetered and metered zones outside of the downtown core.
• Tier 3: $1440 per year, per car. Allows operators to use on-street parking in all priced areas, in residential areas and in Calgary’s downtown core.

The City will also apply a 50 per cent discount to the annual fees for fully-electric carshare vehicles, consistent with the actions in Calgary’s Climate Resilience Strategy and Electric & Low-Emission Vehicle Strategy. The policy change also allows carshare vehicles to park beyond posted time limits (for locations with a limit of 1 hour or longer).

Councillor Evan Woolley stated, “As a frequent user of car-share services, I am glad that City Council approved the policy updates and am happy to see Communauto help fill the void that exists in Calgary right now. I am hopeful these policy changes will attract more companies to the city.”

The service has no monthly fee and its usage costs $0.45/minute, $15/hour or $50 for one day and $35 the following days. For day trips, 100 kms are included in the trip price, and additional kms are billed at $0.20/km. Other plans are offered allowing people to use cars for $2.95/hour, plus $0.29/km, with fuel and insurance included.

“Communauto aims to offer a real alternative to car ownership in complement to transit and active mobility. That is why we propose a tariffication adapted as well to small errands, going for grocery as for weekends or vacations. In Calgary we wish to grow a local mobility service, as we did since more than 25 years in many other communities in Canada. Today we start with a limited fleet in a certain area ready to expand the service following the demand of Calgarians,” says Benoit Robert, CEO and founder of Communauto.

In the next few weeks, interested people can pre-register or become beta-testers with the exclusive use of a car for free, until the complete fleet is available. The service will start regularly during the month of September. To register people can visit calgary.communauto.com.

This announcement is seen as a positive by other city partners. "Calgary Economic Development is excited to be working with Communauto launching in our city. Shared transportation services like Communauto are an important part of what makes Calgary a great place to live and grow a business. This carshare service will allow Calgarians to explore a new flexible and affordable mobility option to meet their needs and plans for corporate and personal travel," said Mary Moran, President and Chief Executive Officer for Calgary Economic Development.

Once launched, Communauto will have increased sanitization measures in place. This includes the availability of sanitizing gel in the cars, the obligation to wash hands before and after using a car and disinfecting the cars on a weekly basis. Additional time up 15 minutes will be offered for free before each use to allow time to disinfect the interior of the car if desired.

“We’re excited for the work ahead. We are investing more than $250 million in projects designed to improve mobility, safety and accessibility to the transportation network across the city. A new project highlighting that is the Airport Trail interchanges – a project delivered in partnership with the Calgary Airport Authority which improves access and business operations in and around the Calgary International Airport,” says Director of Transportation Infrastructure Kerensa Swanson Fromherz.

Infrastructure planning and investment continues to be a high priority for Calgarians as shown in the 2019 Citizen Satisfaction Survey and is a key driver for economic recovery. The City is using its resources to support the continued recovery and diversification of Calgary’s economy and build the foundation of a great future. Here are 20 projects this year keeping Calgarians on the move:

1. Shared electric scooter pilot - If you were missing scooting around to travel to your favourite restaurant, expect to see shared electric scooters (e-scooters) back on the streets in the first week of April (weather permitting) with a few changes to the pilot to help increase public safety.

“One of the benefits of running a pilot project is that we have some flexibility,” says Andrew Sedor, Transportation Planning Strategist. “Calgarians provided feedback about e-scooters last year and as a result, we are making some changes to see if we can address some of the most common concerns.” More details on what these changes are will be available soon on Calgary.ca/scootershare.

2. The Future of 16 Avenue N.W. - This project combines planning and public engagement for two projects - the 16 Avenue N.W. Corridor Study (Sarcee Trail to Crowchild Trail) and the 16 Avenue N.W. Main Street project addressing current and future challenges to how people and goods move through the corridor. The Main Street Streetscape plan in Montgomery focuses on fostering a vibrant business environment and creating a unique identity that reflects the character of the community.

“With Transportation Planning and Main Streets working together, we’re able to focus on both mobility and placemaking to better serve the interests of the communities in the study area,’ says Madhuri Seera, Senior Transportation Engineer. 3. Banff Trail Area Improvements - Multiple projects are being consolidated to provide better value for Calgarians. “We’re combining four adjacent projects that have funding, reducing multiple and consecutive disruptions to Calgarians who would otherwise be inconvenienced by repeated construction projects taking place back-to-back over the next few years” says Kyle Hucik, Senior Transportation Engineer.

“This work will improve connections and mobility in the area, and we’ve coordinated it in such a way that our crews will come in and do everything all at the same time.” Construction is set to begin this spring. Learn more at Calgary.ca/BanffTrailAreaImprovements.

4. 42 Avenue S.E. Complete Streets - When thinking of up-and-coming spots in Calgary, 42 Ave. S.E. should be on your list. Located in a primarily industrial area, 42 Ave. is a unique stretch that connects to important destinations such as the Calgary Food Bank and Stanley Park, recently becoming home to a number of local businesses, including 10 craft breweries in a 7 km stretch.

“The 42 Avenue area has seen a lot of change in the types of businesses and services it has to offer,” says Transportation Engineer Ali Zaidi. “These improvements will help to fill a gap and make the area more inclusive, better connected and more accessible for people that take transit, walk or wheel.” Construction is set to begin this spring. 5. 5 Street S.W. Underpass Enhancements - Located between 9 Avenue and 10 Avenue S.W., the goal of this project is to provide a safe, comfortable and attractive public space while encouraging increased pedestrian and cyclist movement between the Beltline and downtown Calgary.

“We’re focused on improving the environment for people walking and for cyclists by building a safe, well-lit underpass that connects our downtown neighbourhoods,” said Senior Transportation Engineer Colin Chapman. This project is part of the broader Centre City Underpass Enhancement Program, which aims to improve downtown connections and includes enhancing existing underpasses. 6. Airport Trail Interchanges - This project will see the construction of two interchanges on Airport Trail – at 19 Street N.E. and Barlow Trail, improving access for movement of goods, services and people to and from YYC Calgary International Airport now and into the future.

“During construction, we encourage people who drive to add extra time traveling to and from YYC, and along Airport Trail,” said Senior Transportation Engineer Sig Undheim. “In association with YYC, we are looking forward to building these interchanges to help keep Calgarians moving as effectively as possible.” Learn more at Calgary.ca/airporttrail.

7. Carshare Parking Policy - With more than 140,000 members registered with our previous car sharing operator, carsharing is a popular service for Calgarians. Council recently approved changes to our Carshare Parking Policies including new parking rules and a revised fee structure for carshare operators. We are actively working with interested carshare companies and expect to see one or more start operating in 2020.

"Overall our policies are well set up to support carsharing in Calgary. Based on discussions with other cities and several carshare companies, we have identified several adjustments that ensure we are keeping up with best practices," says Eric MacNaughton, Senior Transportation Engineer. 8. Main Streets - The City has developed streetscape master plans for Bowness (Montgomery) Road NW, 37 Street SW and 17 Avenue SW with each plan aimed at creating a vibrant destination, celebrating the character of the community, and encouraging diversity of businesses and buildings. Construction on these projects will start this spring.

   Montgomery (Bowness) Main Street - The Montgomery (Bowness) Main Streets project, between MacKay Road and 52 Street NW, will include a new road surface, multi-use pathway and wider sidewalks on both sides of Bowness Road as well as enhanced pedestrian crossings for safety along Bowness Road NW.     17 Avenue Main Street - The 17 Avenue Main Streets project, between 37 Street SW and Richmond Road SW, will include upgrading underground utilities on 17 Avenue between 29 and 26 Street SW, and on 26 Street between 17 Avenue and Bow Trail. There will also be a number of intersection improvements, traffic signal relocations and upgrades, and improved pedestrian crossings as well as maintenance work on the 17 Avenue Bridge over Crowchild Trail.     37 Street Main Street - Construction on 37 Street Main Streets project, between Bow Trail and Richmond Road SW, starts this spring and includes intersection improvements for pedestrian safety, a new road surface, multi-use pathway, wider sidewalks, and a boulevard space with trees and green amenities. 9. Eau Claire Public Realm - The City is investing in Eau Claire as part of our Downtown Strategy to create an active and lively cultural destination. Across multiple, connected projects, the goal is to improve connections in and out of Eau Claire; build on Eau Claire’s character to create great spaces to live, work, play and shop; and increase the resilience of our downtown through a new flood barrier. Some projects in the area will be constructed over the next two years, while others won’t be realized for several years.

“It’s important that we design and build each project to meet current needs and to lay the foundation for expected future demand as Calgary grows and evolves,” said Joyce Tang, Program Manager, Urban Initiatives. “Eau Claire’s public spaces are important to Calgarians and we want to make sure that we create safe, accessible and beautiful spaces that connect downtown, the river and beyond.” Learn more at Calgary.ca/eauclaire.

10. 9 Avenue S.E. Bridge Replacement - Since 1909, the 9 Ave. S.E. bridge has served as a gateway over the Elbow River between the communities of Inglewood & Ramsay, East Victoria Park, East Village and Calgary’s city centre. After 110 years of service, it’s time to bring the structure up to modern design and engineering standards, helping to connect people who walk, cycle and drive across its span for the next century.

Construction on the new bridge began in November 2019, following completion of a temporary bridge and removal of the old structure in fall 2019. “It’s exciting to see the progress that’s been made on bringing the new bridge to life,” says Manager of Bridges and Structures Evan Fer. “You’ll notice the structure really starting to take shape over the next few months, and we look forward to opening the bridge for citizens and visitors to enjoy this fall.” To learn more, visit Calgary.ca/9Ave.

11. Neighbourhood Streets Program - As communities grow and change, a new Neighbourhood Streets Policy is being launched to replace the 2003 Traffic Calming policy. The updated policy includes many of the current tools to influence on-street travel behaviour but is being updated to create a more inclusive and user-friendly intake process to ensure equitable investment across communities.

Starting with the North Hill Local Area Plan, Transportation will begin work within the new policy and implement quick wins by installing temporary materials to address missing links and traffic issues for people walking and wheeling in the area. “The new policy recognizes that The City works with communities in many ways beyond just traffic calming to enhance residential streets for moving, spending time and meeting neighbours. Our full range of toolkits involves residents and partners through block parties, paint the pavement or street murals, and adaptive sidewalks. 12. Green Line - Work to prepare Green Line south of the Elbow River (Segment 1) for LRT construction continues into 2020. Subject to Council’s April decision for the entire Stage 1 alignment from 16 Avenue N to 126 Avenue S, the RFP for Segment 1 construction is expected to go to market in 2020, with construction expected to start in 2021. 13. Paving Programs - The City’s Annual Pavement Rehabilitation Program is more than $30 million of annual investment to maintain our road and sidewalk infrastructure in good and safe operating condition, using both City and private contractors to complete the work.

“Our life cycle paving program is less costly than full road reconstruction and allows Calgary’s roads and sidewalks to be improved, returning them to like-new condition,” says Barry Poon, Manager of Roads Construction.

The surface overlay program is completed by City forces Paving crews, who work through the summer months restoring and improving Calgary streets and sidewalks to help citizens move around safely and efficiently. Learn more at Calgary.ca/paving.

14. New Traffic Management Centre (TMC) technologies - An upgraded Traffic Management Centre (TMC) is set to launch in the summer of 2020 replacing the original system from 1995. As part of this project, staff and industry experts have begun to integrate various new technologies to receive and disseminate traffic data to serve the mobility needs of citizens and businesses.

“We have integrated a direct feed from the 911 Computer Aided Dispatch to receive traffic incident information immediately,” says Ravi Seera, Manager of Traffic. “We have also integrated crowd-sourcing data into our traffic system so real-time information is leveraged to improve system performance.” To learn more, visit the project page.

15. 16 Avenue North Connected Vehicle Project - Beginning in 2020, we will be installing Connected Vehicle equipment at 12 intersections along 16 Avenue North and in several City emergency vehicles allowing the intersections and connected vehicles to “digitally talk” to each other. Once tested and adopted, these devices will be able to communicate between vehicles, braking technology and smart devices. “Messages could include information that a light is turning red or warnings that a vehicle (equipped with the technology) is quickly approaching the intersection at a high-rate of speed,” says Jodie Marcyniuk, Traffic Engineer.

16. My Fare: Calgary Transit’s new mobile payment app - Calgary Transit is always looking for ways to provide excellent customer service, meeting customer needs now and into the future. This year we are introducing a mobile app that will provide customers additional convenience in buying and displaying their transit fares, making it easier to get around our city.

“We’re excited for the launch of My Fare and we’ve heard from our customers that they are, too. We know our customers come from many different places and use transit in many different ways, so we are thrilled to offer them different options for making their way through the city,” says IT Manager Mashhood Qazi. 17. Crowchild Trail Upgrades – Upgrades to Crowchild Trail kicked off in October 2017 and will wrap up by the end of this summer. This $87 million project is adding lanes for drivers, rearranging off-ramps, and improving surrounding roads and pathways while more than 100,000 vehicles per day continue travelling along this major arterial road.

“Keeping Calgarians moving along Crowchild Trail has been a priority because commuters, businesses and emergency services all rely on using this road 24/7,” said Jeff Baird, Senior Transportation Engineer. “This year, we’re in the process of completing the work on the bridge over the river, rehabilitating adjacent bridges, and polishing things off with final landscaping and paving. We’re all looking forward to the finished product.”

18. Calgary Ring Road construction - In 2020 Alberta Transportation will continue the construction of the Southwest Calgary Ring Road and the West Calgary Ring Road. Construction on two Ring Road integration projects will be completed by The City in 2020:

• Glenmore Trail widening and interchange upgrade – top-lift paving and landscaping
• Bow Trail widening and intersection improvements – intersection work and landscaping

The north side of Calgary has experienced significant population and traffic growth over the last few years. We have allocated funding to construct a number of interchanges along Stoney Trail North. The first to move forward on construction is the new interchange at Stoney Trail and 14 Street N.W. 19. MAX Yellow (Southwest BRT) - Crews will be back in the spring of 2020 to complete landscaping work, as well as some asphalt and concrete work along the route, resurfacing 14 Street lanes from 75 Avenue to Southland Drive, and overall site clean-up.

20. Glenmore Trail/68 Street S.E. Intersection Improvements - In partnership with Point Trotter and Dufferin North Industrial areas south of Glenmore Trail and proposed development north of Glenmore Trail, this project will see the full development of the north leg of the intersection and improve 68 Street S.E. to and from the south.

“The reconstruction of this intersection will improve access for existing nearby industrial development and open up new industrial development opportunities on private and municipally-owned lands within the Southeast 68 Street Industrial Area Structure Plan,” said Senior Transportation Engineer Nik Danilov. • Starting at 9 p.m. on December 6, Bow Trail S.W. will be closed between 33^rd and 37^th Streets S.W. and traffic will be detoured to 17 Avenue S.W. through 12:00 noon on Saturday, December 7^th. In addition, Balsam Drive will be closed to thru traffic during the demolition work.
• Various lane closures will continue on Bow Trail through Saturday, December 7 until 5 p.m. Additional demolition work on the east ramp will require traffic restrictions on Balsam Drive only on Monday, December 9 and Tuesday, December 10.

“This work will create construction noise and dust in the area and is expected to result in travel delays on local roads – please plan accordingly,” says Dwain Babiak, Senior Structural Engineer with The City of Calgary. “Pedestrians using pathways in the area should follow marked detours and be aware of construction activities and the movement of construction equipment and trucks during performance of the work.”

The new bridge is expected to open to the public before 7:00 am on Monday, December 9^th. Some portions of the bridge (east stair) may remain closed until final work is completed and bridge users should heed barricades restricting access to these areas.

We thank residents in the area, and commuters travelling through the area for their patience and understanding during this phase of construction. • There will be a temporary road closure on Bow Trail between 33 Street S.W. and 37 Street S.W. from 9 p.m. on Wednesday, October 30 to 5 a.m. on Thursday, October 31. Traffic will be detoured on 17 Avenue S.W. Keep in mind this work is weather dependent.
• Construction will cause additional noise in the area. Commuters are advised to expect major delays in the area beginning on Wednesday night. Use alternate routes when possible.
• Pedestrians looking to use the existing pedestrian bridge to cross Bow Trail during the road closure will be detoured around the site between 33rd Street S.W. and 37th Street S.W.
• Bow Trail will have reduced lanes between 33 Street S.W. and 37 Street S.W. from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Friday, November 1.

“This work marks an important milestone in the construction of the new bridge. The main span will be lifted above the roadway and secured onto the main piers,” says Dwain Babiak, Senior Structural Engineer with The City of Calgary. “The activities associated with this work will require a full road closure on Bow Trail. We thank citizens for their patience during construction as we continue to work towards opening the new bridge to pedestrian traffic this year.”

Following this work, demolition of the old bridge is scheduled for late November. It is expected the new bridge will open to pedestrians at that time, barring weather delays.

Crews will continue focusing on salting and plowing high-volume Priority 1 routes (such as Crowchild Trail and Glenmore Trail) to keep the highest number of citizens moving safely through The City. It is expected that plowing operations will intensify through the day as snowfall becomes heavier.

Snow is anticipated to slow Tuesday evening. When the snowfall ends, this will activate the seven day snow plan, and crews will begin working down the priority list.

At this time, The City does not anticipate the need to call a snow route parking ban.

“In anticipation of snowfall over the next few days, we have been getting our vehicles and crews ready,” says Roads Maintenance District Manager Jim Fraser. “This first storm of the season will likely result in accumulation of snow on the streets, but the warm road temperatures and mild weather should make this a relatively easy clean-up for us.”

The City’s Snow and Ice Control (SNIC) program plan is organized months before the winter season to account for a variety of weather conditions. Under the plan, crews sand, salt and plow roads based on a Council-approved priority system - the more traffic there is on a roadway, the higher the priority.

“This priority system keeps the greatest number of commuters, moving quickly and safely,” says Fraser.

While City crews are prepared, the first snowfall of the season always seems to catch people a little off guard. For this reason, The City is reminding drivers to prepare for potentially slower driving conditions. “Give yourself a little bit of extra time, plan for delays, slow down and drive to the conditions,” adds Fraser.

Drivers are reminded to leave at least 10 metres distance - about three car lengths - between your vehicle and the working sanders, graders and other snow removal equipment. Do not pass working sanders or equipment.

There are several ways Calgarians can stay informed on winter road conditions, such as visiting calgary.ca/snow, following us on Twitter @yyctransport, viewing our traffic cameras or by contacting 311.

In addition, The City is launching a new Snow Route notification system through the myID system. Citizens, particularly those who live on snow routes, are encouraged to sign up for these text and e-mail notifications.

To sign up, users can go to myID.calgary.ca, sign in, select “Open a Service”, click on “Transportation” and click on “Roads Notifications”. Alternatively, they can go to https://roadsnotifications.calgary.ca and subscribe.

It is important to note that users of the previous email notification system must also register for the new application with a MyID account, and will be contacted to make the switch via email.

“These changes are a combination of extensive public engagement, research, industry best practices and align with current user behavior," says Andrew Sedor, Business Development Coordinator with The City of Calgary. “The good news is most people are already safely accessing The City’s transportation network and whether you’re on two wheels or four, these updates ensure roads, sidewalks, pathways and cycle tracks are accessible and inclusive for all.” 

Changes already in effect include:

• Allowing skateboards, scooters, inline skates, etc. on cycle tracks and in public spaces in the downtown core, including Olympic Plaza and along Stephen Avenue.

• Allowing electric pedal assist bicycles on Calgary Transit during the same non-peak hours that other bicycles are permitted and all bikes weighing less than 55lbs are now permitted on bike racks on the front of City busses.

• People cycling can now use either arm to indicate a right turn and can yield instead of coming to a full stop when entering/exiting a roadway or sidewalk from/to a pathway.

Additionally, a safe passing distance for drivers and cyclists comes into effect on September 1. The new bylaw requires of a minimum of one metre (or 1.5 m if the speed limit is over 60km/h.) from the outermost edge of the bicycle (i.e. the handlebars). To pass someone riding a bicycle, drivers can now legally cross a solid yellow line (when safe to do so). These changes are in line with the regulations in most Canadian provinces and United States.

Calgarians are encouraged to educate themselves on the new safe passing distance to avoid a potential fine of $203. Cyclists are also required to ride as close to the side of the road as is safe.

The Green Line is an important strategic project for The City of Calgary that will help move people across the city to different economic centres like the downtown core and Quarry Park. Stage 1 of the Green Line is an investment in Calgary’s future that will provide more options for Calgarians to move around the city.

Over the last year and a half, The City has worked to refine the Green Line design, specifically the tunneled portion of stage 1 between 16 Avenue N and 4 Street S.E. We’ve worked closely with industry experts and are thoroughly evaluating all possible risks, including technical, financial and schedule, associated with building the Downtown and Beltline portions of the project.

Based on our analysis and what we’ve heard we will be continuing to evaluate how to build the Green Line through the Downtown and Beltline. This means we will be investigating ways to shorten the tunnel and bring as much to surface as possible. Starting this summer, The City will be hosting information sessions to show Calgarians what we have learned through the tunnel constructability reviews and plans to move forward.

We currently have 16 kilometres of the project ready to be built today, and we will be releasing a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) for the portion of the project between 4 Street S.E. and 126 Avenue S.E. Moving forward with this portion of the project now will be an economic stimulant by bringing jobs to Calgary and will allow The City to take advantage of lower construction costs.

On opening day, Stage 1 of the Green Line will connect nearly 200,000 people to over 100,000 jobs and move approximately 60 – 65,000 riders per day.

City announces snow route parking ban

The City of Calgary is advising citizens of a snow route parking ban that will go into effect on Monday, February 18 at 12 p.m. Due to significant accumulations of snow and high drifting across Calgary, the Snow Route parking bans are expected to be in effect for 72 hours, or until lifted by The City.

How snow routes work

Calgarians who live on a snow route are asked to move their vehicles during the ban. Vehicles that remain parked on these roads are subject to enforcement, up to and including a parking tag and tow. Snow routes are marked by a blue sign with a white snowflake. To find more information regarding snow route parking bans, visit Calgary.ca/snow.

The snow route parking ban will help crews clear Priority 2 routes (such as Kensington Road, Fairmount Drive, Bus Routes) as efficiently and safely as possible. Snow clearing operations are ongoing. Parked cars must be moved from snow routes when a parking ban is called. Vehicles that remain parked on these roads during the ban are subject to enforcement, up to an including a parking ticket and tow.

Roads continues tackling the snow

Roads crews are working around the clock maintaining Calgary’s roads to keep Calgarians on the move.

“Crews have been working around the clock since before the snow started falling on Friday,” says Chris McGeachy, spokesperson for Roads. “We’ve seen numerous snow events in the past few weeks, coupled with frigid temperatures that continue challenging our snow clearing efforts. The parking ban will help us make good progress on our bus routes and connector roads.”

Snow route parking bans support snow plowing operations by removing parked vehicles from the streets, and allowing crews to clear snow from Calgary roads more efficiently. “Our goal is always to keep the largest amount of Calgarians moving safely as quickly as possible,” adds McGeachy.

“Northern cities have a lot to learn from one another and we look forward to applying what we learn about winter city planning from colleagues visiting from Sweden, Finland, Russia, the United States and other parts of Canada,” says Katherine Glowacz, Active Transportation Planner with The City of Calgary.

Calgary was chosen by the Winter Cycling Federation to host the congress because of the dedication and commitment in embracing year-round cycling. The cycle track, pathway system and snow clearing are highlighted as noteworthy infrastructure practices that contribute to the Winter Cycling Federation vision; winter cycling is for everyone, where cycling year-round is understood as a normal and practical, where cycling is a safe and viable transportation option for people of all ages and abilities.

“Calgary is a great place to give winter cycling a try. We have many nice days during our winter season and even after snow has fallen, The City clears designated portions of our cycling network,” says Glowacz.

On average, there are three times as many daily winter bicycle trips along the cycle track routes than before the cycle tracks were installed and about 30 per cent of summer cyclists continue to ride through the colder months.

Currently, trucks heavier than 8.5 tonnes are not allowed to cross the bridge between 7 Street and 8 Street S.E. The change means trucks heavier than 5 tonnes (11,000 lbs) will no longer be allowed to use the bridge. The decision was made following a recent inspection of the bridge.

“The bridge structure has served Calgary for 110 years. This restriction is being put in place to ensure viability until it is replaced. We are now seeing the impact of heavy traffic and have decided to reduce the weight allowance,” says Charmaine Buhler, Manager of Bridge Maintenance at The City.

The new restriction will have the following impacts:

• Traffic lanes on the bridge will be reduced from three lanes to two lanes.
• Heavy trucks over 5 tonnes will be detoured.

Detour information

Trucks coming from the east (inbound to downtown) will be asked to detour via two methods:

• Vehicles inbound from 17 Avenue/Blackfoot Trail S.E. will be asked to detour via 26 Avenue to Dartmouth Road, 25 Avenue, northbound Macleod Trail and into Downtown.
• Vehicles already on 9 Avenue S.E. will detour via 8 Street to MacDonald Avenue to 12 Avenue and into downtown.

The outbound detour will have vehicles turn right to 4 Street S.E. to 12 Avenue and MacDonald Avenue to 8 Street.

New 9 Ave S.E. Bridge in the works

A construction tender is in market right now to hire a contractor to build the new 9 Avenue S.E. bridge which will be accessible to heavy trucks. Construction is expected to begin on the new bridge in 2019 and open to traffic in late 2020. For more information about the future 9 Avenue S.E. bridge, please go to calgary.ca/9avebridge.

“Through routine checks in the area, officers have identified the underpass as a location for consistent criminal activity,” explains Constable Jake Tyerman, Community Resource Officer, Calgary Police Service. “Working with our partners, we support the decision to close this underpass as it directly addresses the unintended consequences of an under-utilized public space.”

The City’s Transportation Department investigated the concerns at this location, counted pedestrian usage (averaging 14 people per day) and assessed the feasibility of completing a closure of the underpass. Based on these factors, it was determined a closure of this underpass was the best course of action.

Alternate crossings of Glenmore Trail are located at Macleod Trail and Fairmount Drive.

Work to close the underpass will begin on Dec. 11, 2018 and is expected to take two to three days, weather dependent. Following the closure, the north sidewalk ramps, as well as the south stairway and sidewalk will remain open to maintain the pedestrian connection across the LRT tracks.

To ensure those affected by the closure are informed, signage will be posted at the underpass and nearby businesses have been notified.

“Communities to the west of Macleod Trail and 194 Avenue are land-locked from Macleod Trail, separated by the CPR tracks and the Priddis Slough, with primary access only by Sheriff King Street to the north,” said Ward 13 Councillor Diane Colley-Urquhart. “That’s why this connection is so needed. Whether you drive, take transit, cycle or walk, this new road improves how people travel between communities now and into the future.”

Connecting the west leg of 194 Avenue also provides access to Silverado and future growth areas in the West Macleod region. This new east-west connection supports an already effective transportation network and will add thousands of new residents and employment opportunities.

“I am proud of our government’s investment in this project that will provide an important connection for south Calgary and opens up new development opportunities,” said Calgary-Shaw MLA Graham Sucha. “Building strong, sustainable infrastructure like this in Calgary is all part of creating an economy built to last.”

This project is one of 29 major transportation construction projects The City has been working on in 2018 that will have a positive impact to Calgary’s infrastructure network.

The project includes:

• A four-lane divided roadway with multi-use pathways on both sides between Macleod Trail and Sheriff King Street
• A bridge structure over the CPR tracks and future LRT tracks
• A pedestrian underpass for walkers and cyclists
• Some modifications to the intersections at Macleod Trail and at Sheriff King Street.

Preserving the natural environment was also a key to this project. The City took great strides in sustaining Priddis Slough, a large and bio-diverse wetland, along with consideration of wildlife and wetland habitat in the area. The new bridge structure acts as a wildlife corridor, allowing wildlife to continue their movement through the wetland area.

Final landscaping will take place in the summer of 2019. Budget for this project is $66.7 million.

On October 29, 2018, The City of Calgary will issue the first of two operating permits for Phase One of the Council approved Dockless Bike Share Pilot to Lime. Calgarians can expect to see shared bike services on streets and pathways starting this week.

Similar to car share technology, the dockless bike share will be GPS-enabled and can be rented using each company’s smartphone app. A bicycle can be parked in an acceptable public space, making sure it is not impeding pedestrian traffic. Each operator will have a service area within Calgary, where bicycles will be available to the public.

“The City is taking an innovative approach to the traditional bike share model,” says Dockless Bike Share Pilot Project Manager Nathan Carswell. “We are excited that citizens of Calgary will be given another mobility option that will connect them to the places they live, work and play.”

Two applications to operate in Phase One of the pilot were received from Lime and U-bicycle. Both companies meet the operating requirements outlined as part of the permit application. Lime is planning to commence operations in October 2018 while U-bicycle plans to start operations in spring 2019.

For the first phase of the pilot, Lime will have a fleet of 375 electric pedal assist bicycles and will be granted a permit to operate within Calgary’s streets and park space. The e-bikes will initially be placed along what are anticipated to be high utilization corridors along Stephen’s Avenue, Eau Claire, the river pathway system, along 17^th avenue south, in Mission, Bridgeland, Kensington and Inglewood. Moving forward, placement will occur as usership dictates.

“Lime is very excited to be hitting the pavement in Calgary, the first Canadian city to launch Lime-E dockless electric bikes. We have been energized by working with The City as they move forward on their commitment to reducing barriers for active modes of transportation and are looking forward to helping empower Calgarians with this greener, more efficient, and affordable transportation options,” said Scott Harvey, Lime’s Operations Manager for Calgary

While The City will provide oversight, the pilot will be fully funded and operated by each bike share company. Costs to The City will be recovered by fees collected from the permitted operators.

“Besides being implemented at no cost to the City, bike share will create jobs, promote mobility, and enhance tourism. We’ve seen the success of car2go and other ‘disruptive’ technologies—bike share is another example of Calgary adopting bold new transportation methods. Our cycling infrastructure is in place and this pilot project will only compliment it,” says Councillor Evan Woolley.

Set to run until 2020, the bike share pilot will allow The City to explore new ways of providing flexible, affordable and accessible mobility options. Throughout the process, feedback will be gathered by the operators through customer surveys.

An application process for phase two of the pilot will take place in Spring 2019.

Several improvements have been implemented as part of this work, including new traffic signals at 88 Avenue N.E., two additional traffic lanes, additional street lighting, expansion of the storm water system and a pathway along Metis Trail.

The twinning of this final 1.6 km stretch of road completes the expansion along the corridor, providing a consistent and streamlined driving experience for users of this busy northeast roadway and provides an additional connection to communities developing adjacent to Metis Trail.

“This project was an opportunity to partner with private industry to enhance infrastructure to support existing communities and encourage future development in northeast Calgary,” says Councillor George Chahal. “These improvements will not only benefit motorists, but also provide safer connections for pedestrians and cyclists.”

With separate areas of road work responsibility within the project area, completing the work as one project instead of two allowed for an efficient construction process. This approach also allowed for cost savings, with construction for The City’s portion of the project coming in under budget at $3.3M.

“Working together allowed us to find cost efficiencies, eliminate potential safety issues with having two separate contractors in a limited area and complete the project more quickly,” says Director of Transportation Planning, Ryan Vanderputten. “We’re very pleased with the results and look forward to future opportunities for this type of collaboration.”

ELA, or ‘Electric Autonomous,’ is a fully-accessible 12-person vehicle, which will move passengers between the Calgary Zoo and TELUS Spark throughout the month of September.

This initiative is a public-private partnership, sponsored by Alberta-based Pacific Western Transportation (PWT), who will be operating the vehicle. Additional sponsorship has been provided by TELUS and ATCO, as well as a $50,000 grant provided by the Federal Government’s Program to Advance Connectivity and Automation in the Transportation System (ACATS).

“This is a very exciting initiative for Calgary and all of Canada,” says Kent Hehr, MP, Calgary Centre. “Autonomous technology is an opportunity to expand accessible transportation options for all Canadians.”

Under the Living Lab strategy, The City of Calgary is working with Calgary Economic Development to make public spaces, transportation corridors and land more accessible for the testing of technological innovation. It’s an example of how we’re working together to make Calgary more business friendly. This pilot will provide an opportunity to test the long-term feasibility of autonomous technology in Calgary, as part of The City’s 30-year Transportation Plan.

“For the majority of Calgary’s existence as a city, vehicles driven by people has been the norm, but we’re now potentially on the cusp of a significant change to the way people commute to where they live, work and play,” says Michael Thompson, general manager of Transportation. “Technologies evolve quickly, and The City of Calgary wants to be in a place where we can understand and take proactive steps to ensure new technology creates a better quality of life for Calgarians. This pilot puts Calgary in that place.”

Guided by sensors, including a key piece of high accuracy GPS equipment developed by local firm NovAtel, part of Hexagon’s Positioning Intelligence Division, ELA will operate at low speeds of approximately 12 km/hour, on a one-kilometre service road between the two tourist attractions.“We are proud to partner with the City of Calgary,” says Dan Finley, VP of Business Development at PWT. “It’s important for governments and industry to work together to learn about this evolving technology. It has the capacity to be a real game changer in the field of transportation.”

Throughout the trial, research will be conducted by the faculties of Science and the Schulich School of Engineering at the University of Calgary and passengers will have the opportunity to provide on-site feedback facilitated by the University and Dillon Consulting.

ELA is available to ride free of charge from Sept. 8 - 30. Rides can be booked online via ridewithela.ca. Following the Calgary pilot, ELA moves up to Edmonton for further testing in the Alberta climate.

Starting on Tuesday, there will be a closure in place from College Lane to 8 Street S.W., including the intersection of 7 Street and 17 Avenue S.W. College Lane will remain open throughout this phase.

Following the completion of this work and the re-opening of the intersection near the end of the month, a closure will be in effect at the intersection of 8 Street and 17 Avenue S.W., as well as on 17 Avenue from 8 Street to 9 Street S.W., to facilitate replacing underground utilities and rebuilding the road. The closure of 8 Street S.W. is anticipated to take roughly seven to 10 days.

Weather permitting, construction on 17 Ave. S.W. will continue until mid-November, with the goal of completing all work up to 9 Street S.W. before pausing for the winter season.

Southwest closures

• 11 Street S.W. will be closed between 6 Ave. S.W. and 9 Ave. S.W. beginning at 7 p.m. on Friday Aug. 31 until 5 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 4. This closure accommodates underground utility work.
• 11 Street S.W. will have reduced lanes between 8 Ave. S.W. and 9 Ave. S.W. as well as a single left lane closure on 9 Ave. S.W. at 11 Street S.W. beginning at 5 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 4 until 8 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 17. These closures accommodate underground utility work.
• Heritage Drive will have lanes closed between Macleod Trail and 4A Street S.W. on Saturday, Sept. 1 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 2 from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Two-way traffic set up on opposite side of construction both days. This closure accommodates paving.
• Richmond Road S.W. will have lanes closed between 30 Street and 37 Street as well as 37 Street and 51 Street S.W. beginning on Saturday, Sept. 1 until Sunday, Sept. 2 daily from 4 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be a two-way traffic set up on opposite side of construction. Detour routes to 26 Ave. S.W. to the north and Sarcee Road to the south will be posted via signage. This closure accommodates paving.
• Eastbound 8 Avenue S.W. will be closed between 8 Street S.W. and 9 Street S.W. nightly from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. until Wednesday, Sept. 5. This closure accommodates underground utility work.

• Anderson Road will be reduced by one lane in both directions, west of 24 Street S.W. from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (daily) until Saturday, Sept. 1 for road construction related to Anderson Road widening and upgrades.

14 Street S.W. Transitway Project closures

• The right lane on eastbound Southland Drive will be closed at 14 Street S.W. from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 31, plus 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 1 and Sunday, Sept. 2

14 Street S.W. at Anderson Road will be closed to north / south through-traffic and all left turns will be restricted from 8 p.m. Friday, August 3 until 5 a.m. Tuesday, August 7. In addition, all eastbound through-traffic on Anderson Road will be put into the left turn bay to continue east. A flagger will be on site in an effort to keep traffic moving eastbound through the intersection. Traffic will be directed to Elbow Drive to bypass the closure. This work is required for the upgrade and development of the Anderson Road project.

Also included in this project are upgrades to the Glenmore Trail/Crowchild Trail interchange and a new pedestrian bridge over Crowchild Trail at 54 Avenue S.W.

“This project is one of several City-led projects to connect Calgary's road network to the ring road and will accommodate changes to traffic volume and patterns that are expected after the opening of the Southwest Ring Road,” said Julie Radke, Manager of the City’s Ring Road Integration program. “Because these projects are located within the city right of way, the City of Calgary is responsible for the design and construction of connecting Calgary's road network to the ring road.”

“We are putting into place some measures to ensure citizens can still get to where they want to go,” said Project Manager Syed Ali. “As the project moves forward, we are coordinating detours and lane closures with other projects in the area, staging as much work as we can during off-peak commute times to minimize impacts over the rush hour, and will make a temporary roadway alignment on Glenmore Trail in order to keep two traffic lanes open in each direction.”

Crews will remove and pave over the existing median before detouring the traffic to the south side of the road. This will allow for construction on the north side before traffic can be switched over to allow for construction on the remaining section.

The project team is working closely with Alberta Transportation who are responsible for building the Southwest Ring Road, including the reconstruction of Glenmore Trail from Sarcee Trail and connecting with the work the City is doing.

The upgrades to the Glenmore Trail/Crowchild Trail S.W. interchange will modify the current interchange to accommodate changes to traffic volume and patterns that are expected after the opening of the ring road.

The new pedestrian bridge over Crowchild Trail at 54 Avenue S.W. is designed to be more accessible and convenient, and will result in a better experience for the user. The existing bridge near 55 Avenue will remain open and will be removed once the new bridge is complete and opened.

Access to nearby businesses will be maintained throughout the construction period.

This project is one of 29 major transportation construction projects the City is working on in 2018 that will have a positive impact to Calgary’s infrastructure network. Construction is expected to last until the fall of 2019.

The budget for this project is $35 million.

Starting on Wednesday, July 18, 14^th & 15^th Avenue between 8^th and 11^th Street SW will become one-way streets, with 14^th Avenue accommodating westbound traffic and 15^th Avenue eastbound.

“Although construction on 17^th Avenue has been paused until September, introducing these changes now will allow Calgarians to become accustomed to the new flow of traffic in the area,” says Duane Delaney, Manager of Major Road Projects with The City. “These changes will not only increase traffic calming with the addition of new signalized intersections and stop signs, but will also help to maintain the east-west connection and allow traffic to continue operating during construction.”

To facilitate the setup of the one-way traffic pattern, temporary no-parking signs will be set up on July 17, 24 hours before work begins, and will remain in place until the one-ways have been completed. Vehicles remaining on the roadways when work begins will be ticketed and towed at the owner’s expense. Once the set-up work is complete, both 14^th and 15^th Avenues will offer parking on both sides of the street, in addition to an on-street bike lane.

“These upgrades improve how people travel in the area and between communities now and into the future, whether you drive, take transit, cycle or walk,” said Ward 6 Councillor Jeff Davison. “I believe travel in this area will be safer because of these improvements which include crosswalks in all directions connecting to sidewalks at the Bow Trail and 85 Street S.W. intersection, and a signalized pedestrian crossing on Bow Trail, east of 85 Street.”

“The Government of Alberta is proud to provide funding for this project because it will improve safety, provide development opportunities and continue to demonstrate our commitment to purposefully invest in the Calgary region,” said Calgary-Bow MLA Debra Drever. “Working closely with The City of Calgary, we have established priorities that will ensure a transportation network that is prepared to service Albertans for generations to come.”

This project is one of 29 major transportation construction projects The City is working on in 2018 that will have a positive impact to Calgary’s infrastructure network.

The project includes:

• Adding an eastbound and westbound lane between Old Banff Coach Road (OBCR) and 85th Street S.W., for now and future vehicle volumes
• Extending pathways on the north and south side of Bow Trail to OBCR and Strathcona Blvd. for better walking and cycling connections between communities and existing pathways
• Reducing speed limit to 60km/hr on Bow Trail, providing a safer space to travel in the area
• Installation of a pedestrian signal crossing at 77 Street S.W. (approx. 800m, east of 85 Street), to improve community connections.

At the Bow Trail and 85 Street S.W. intersection, dual left-turn lanes in all four directions will be added, as well as two through lanes in all directions. At the intersection of Bow Trail, OBCR and Strathcona Blvd., a third left-turn lane will be added from southbound OBCR to eastbound Bow Trail and the two left turn lanes from westbound Bow Trail to southbound Strathcona Blvd. will be lengthened.

Construction will begin in early July and is expected to last until the fall of 2019.

The City has put measures into place to ensure citizens can still get where they need to go, including the coordination of projects and detours, staged work during off-peak commute times to minimize impacts over the rush hour, and where possible, geometric changes to the roadway and temporary alignment changes in order to keep traffic lanes open. For this project, it’s anticipated that there will be minimal impact to traffic as the new lanes are being constructed north of the existing Bow Trail.

The budget for this project is $20 million.

• Single right-hand lane closure on both northbound and southbound Crowchild Trail between Bow Trail and Memorial Drive (Sat. at 9 a.m. – Tues. at 5 a.m.)
• Closure of the following ramps:

• Southbound Crowchild Trail to eastbound Memorial Drive (Fri. at 9 p.m. – Sat. at 5 a.m.)
• Eastbound Memorial Drive (Parkdale Blvd) to southbound Crowchild Trail (Fri. at 9 p.m. – Tues. at 5 a.m.)
• Northbound Crowchild Trail to eastbound Memorial Drive (Fri. at 9 p.m. – Tues. at 5 a.m.)

Please note: Because some of these closures are expected to remain in place until 5 a.m. on Tuesday, June 26, motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible and plan alternate routes – especially during Monday’s morning and evening commutes.

Southwest closures

Glenmore Trail S.W. & Crowchild Trail S.W. flyover

The flyover from southbound Crowchild Trail S.W. to eastbound Glenmore Trail will be closed overnight Friday and Saturday, 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. nightly, so crews can complete a s​tormwater connection and concrete work within the median.

Vehicle traffic will continue on southbound Crowchild Trail S.W. and perform a U-turn between two medians. The U-turn detour will be signed, and a flagger will be present to direct traffic onto the northbound Crowchild Trail exit ramp for access onto eastbound Glenmore Trail S.W.

Truck and bus traffic will be detoured onto westbound Glenmore Trail and utilize the 37 Street S.W. roundabout to access eastbound Glenmore Trail S.W.

90 Avenue S.W.

The left-hand lane on westbound 90 Avenue will be closed at 14 Street S.W. from June 22 to July 4 for ATCO to decommission some existing pipes. Because this work involves excavation in the closed lane, 90 Avenue will be reduced to one lane for westbound traffic for the duration of the construction. Southbound 14 Street S.W. will have lane reductions between 90 Avenue and Southland Drive S.W. on Friday, June 22 from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. This closure accommodates construction and pump truck.

9 Avenue S.W.

9 Avenue S.W. over top of 14 Street S.W. will be reduced to a single lane beginning on Friday, June 22 at 6 p.m. until Sunday, June 24 at 9 p.m. This closure accommodates underground utility work.

Southeast closures

5 Avenue S.E.

5 Avenue S.E. will be closed between 3 Street and 4 Street S.E. starting at 7 a.m. Monday, June 25 until 7 p.m. Monday, August 24. This closure accommodates Enmax service tie-in for BOSA development. Access will be maintained during Calgary Stampede July 5-15.

3 Street S.E.

Mayor Naheed Nenshi said a total investment of $441 million dollars ($408M: 29 major transportation construction projects and additional infrastructure work, $33M: 40+ pavement rehabilitation projects) is going into Calgary’s infrastructure network this year alone.

“With this investment, we are keeping Calgarians moving while also supporting our economy by creating over 3,500 jobs,” said Mayor Nenshi. “Once completed, this work will lead to improvements in travel, mobility and safety for people who walk, drive and cycle, also enabling continued development and growth in our city. Construction is never convenient while it’s happening, but the results of all this work will be worth it.”

Kerensa Fromherz, director of Transportation Infrastructure, added that part of enabling continued development and growth in our city means working hand-in-hand with communities and businesses. “We recognize that construction affects everyone and we’re working with communities and businesses to manage impacts as much as possible,” said Fromherz. “This includes staging our work around community events - such as last week’s marathon - and considering business needs such as ceasing construction on 17 Avenue between Macleod Trail S. and 14 Street S.W. in July and August based on the peak summer season for the businesses there.”

With construction work taking place in every quadrant of Calgary, The City has put measures into place to ensure citizens can still get where they need to go. Such measures include the coordination of projects and detours around the city, staged work during off-peak commute times to minimize impacts over rush hour, and where possible, geometric changes to the roadway and temporary alignment changes in order to keep the same number of lanes open.

Troy McLeod, director of Roads, said his crews and contracted staff are preparing for a busy season which includes paving work at more than 40 locations, covering about 212 lane-kilometers of road. Some of the major projects include the repaving of 14 Street, Barlow Trail, Memorial Drive and Heritage Drive. (A full list can be found online at Calgary.ca/paving)

“In addition, there will be various concrete repairs, traffic signal construction, streetlight repairs, bridge repairs and traffic safety improvements to help make life better for Calgarians,” he said. “All of this work will ensure safe and smooth roads for all modes of transportation.”

McLeod said his crews and contracted services will be paying extra attention to making all construction sites pedestrian-friendly. “It is our responsibility to ensure all our construction jobs include plans to maintain safe pedestrian infrastructure in order to disrupt Calgarians as little as possible while keeping their safety in mind.”

McLeod also reminds drivers to please slow down and watch out for crews on-site. “We would like to take this opportunity to remind Calgarians that the road is our crew’s office and we want to make sure they go home safe. We ask that you please adhere to all signage posted and help our workers get their jobs done safely and effectively.”

“Every year, we get potholes thanks to the freeze-thaw cycle conditions that cause additional stress on our roadways,” said Mayor Nenshi, adding potholes are a problem in all winter cities across Canada. “But, in Calgary, with the harsh winter we had, this year has been particularly difficult here. I am happy to say our crews are making great progress in getting them filled.”

Potholes form when snow melts into cracks in the asphalt and then freezes, expanding in the cracks. The number of 311 reports of potholes this year is approximately 5,000 (including duplicate reports of the same pothole) which is slightly higher than what has been seen in previous years.

“As crews were not able to fix potholes throughout the winter this year due to extreme cold temperatures, they have been playing catch-up to get the work done,” said Mayor Nenshi, adding crews are currently filling about 700 potholes a week. “They are making great progress but we still have some work to do.”

Crews address potholes on a priority basis with major roads being completed first. To identify pavement in need of repair, The City inspects major roads twice a month and collector roads once a month. In residential areas, however, The City relies on citizens to report concerns.

The City encourages residents and motorists to help ensure that potholes are identified and repaired by reporting them by calling 311 or using the road repair form on the 311-online system at Calgary.ca.

Being responsive to neighborhood complaints, including filling potholes, is critical to improving residents’ quality of life, said Mayor Nenshi. “We appreciate the patience and understanding from Calgarians as our crews continue to work hard to improve the roads for them.”

The City has budgeted $6.2 million this year for minor asphalt repairs which includes potholes.

Roads Director Troy McLeod is reminding drivers to slow down and watch out for crews working to repair potholes on city streets. “When driving, remember to always look ahead. If you can spot a pothole in advance, then you have time to steer clear of it safely, without leaving your lane, or by safely changing lanes,” he added.

Some additional driving safety tips to remember during pothole season include: 

• Don’t tailgate: Leaving plenty of space between your vehicle and the one in front of you increases your odds of identifying a pothole with enough distance to avoid it.

• Avoid puddles: Be cautious when driving through water as there may be potholes hiding in it.

• Slow down: If you can’t safely avoid a pothole, slow down to help mitigate damage.

• Check tire pressure: Ensure your tires are inflated to the manufacturer’s recommended pressure. Under- or over-inflated tires can make pothole damage worse.

Starting at 9 p.m. on Friday, May 25, eastbound Glenmore Trail will be reduced to one lane and westbound Glenmore Trail will be reduced to two lanes between Deerfoot Trail and Blackfoot Trail S.E.

Motorists travelling on Glenmore between Deerfoot Trail and Blackfoot Trail are advised to expect delays with lane and speed reductions in place.

This closure will remain in place until 5 a.m. on Monday, May 28 and accommodates the removal of an abandoned rail bridge.

Several roads in-and-around the downtown and surrounding areas will be impacted by the Scotiabank Marathon on Sunday. Motorists are advised to plan to take alternate routes to avoid traffic congestion.

The following road closures will be in place from 6 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 27:

• Olympic Way S.E. / 4 Street S.E. will be closed between 9 Avenue S.E. and Stampede Trail S.E.
• 9 Avenue S.E. will be closed between 3 Street S.E. and 12 Street S.E.
• 11 Avenue will be reduced to two westbound lanes from Olympic Way S.E. to 14 Street S.W.
• 12 Street will be closed between 9 Avenue S.E. and 1 Avenue N.E.
• 1 Avenue N.E. will be closed between 12 Street N.E. and 4 Street N.E.

The City is encouraging motorists to use either Southland Drive, or Memorial Drive as alternate westbound routes.

This closure remains in place through 5 a.m. on Tuesday, May 22 and accommodates the removal of an abandoned rail bridge. Information on this project can be found on Calgary.ca.

Street sweeping gives City crews the opportunity to remove sanding materials and other debris that has accumulated on streets, sidewalks and boulevards from winter operations. Removing this material helps make the roads safer, protect the environment and keeps Calgary looking beautiful.

“The unprecedented duration of this year’s winter means it is vital for crews to sweep neighbourhoods in a timely fashion,” says Bill Biensch, Maintenance Manager at Roads. “We ask that citizens keep an eye out for our new street sweeping signs, which will indicate when our crews are coming, and when cars must be moved off the roadway. Failure to move your vehicle may result in a ticket.”

Citizens whose street sweeping occurs on garbage collection days are reminded to leave their bins on their property’s adjacent boulevard or on the sidewalk. This will allow both the garbage to be picked up and the streets to be swept.

Residential street sweeping this year will run 7 days a week which means many areas will be swept on the weekend. Please ensure vehicles are moved before 7 am and that visitors to your home are also aware of the parking restrictions.

Calgary Parking Authority reminds Calgarians to move their vehicles or face the consequences

Vehicles that have not been moved from an road with a parking ban in place are subject to a ticket and tow, to a nearby street if space is available, or to The City of Calgary’s Impound Lot.

The Calgary Parking Authority is using a combination of enforcement officers and photo enforcement during street sweeping this year, so tickets will be placed on the vehicle’s windshield or mailed to the registered owner. The ticket fine amount associated with street sweeping is $120; however, if paid within 10 days it is reduced to $80, or is $90 if paid within 30 days.

“The Calgary Parking Authority supports this important work by providing enforcement services. We appreciate Calgarian’s cooperation in removing their vehicles so that our streets can be cleaned as effectively as possible” says Joan Hay, Calgary Parking Authority’s Manager of Enforcement.

Citizens are encouraged to stay informed on when street sweeping in happening by visiting Calgary.ca/sweep.

Bill Biensch, Roads Maintenance Manager, says street sweeping can not start until the snow and ice melts.

“Due to the unprecedented nature of this year’s winter we adjusted our sweeping schedules to ensure our operation can complete this work efficiently and effectively. Once gutters are free of ice we will be able to begin sweeping in residential areas.”

Citizens are advised the online schedule of residential street sweeping dates will not be posted until the weather patterns trend upward. Street sweeping on major roads that are free of snow may also be postponed as crews are currently unable to use water, needed for street sweeping, without it freezing.

“Crews will be doing some pre-sweeping in areas where they are able. But, unfortunately, the lower temperatures right now limit our ability to wet the roadway for sweeping,” says Biensch. “When the temperature stabilizes, we are prepared to start our sweeping program as normal.”

“We want to thank everyone who moved their vehicle off the snow routes during this ban. It really helps our crews clear snow from curb-to-curb which makes the roads safer for everyone,” says Roads Maintenance Manager Bill Biensch. “Crews can now start operations on residential routes sooner.”

Crews are currently finishing Day 2 of the 7 Day Snow Clearing Plan. Currently, there are 49 sanders and 24 graders working on roadways and 48 dedicated staff with 24 pieces of small equipment working on pedestrian facilities such as steps, walks, and pedestrian overpasses.

Once crews are finished their work on the main routes tomorrow, they will move into the residential areas where they will knock-down ruts and lay down material to ensure all roads are passable.

Biensch is asking citizens to be patient as crews are working on a priority system which is reset every time it snows.

“We have had more snow this month than any February in past five years and we are only 12 days in,” says Biensch. “Our snow clearing plan, which normally lasts seven days, has been active for 15 consecutive days due to multiple snows events. I would like to recognize City crews for their dedicated efforts during this time and all Calgarians for their support and patience as we work to get the job done.”

As of noon today, 50 hours into the ban, The Calgary Parking Authority had issued 1,920 tickets for non-compliance with the parking ban. The final numbers are expected to be slightly lower than the Feb. 5th parking ban which saw 2,945 tickets issued in just 46 hours.

“We had every available officer dedicated to snow route enforcement during this ban. It is our hope that every car would move off the snow route,” said Kevin Bulmer, Enforcement Coordinator with the Calgary Parking Authority. “Thousands of vehicles did comply and that made the snow clearing efforts more effective.”

The City of Calgary and Cadillac Fairview have partnered to invest a joint cost of $13M ($6.5 M each) in the construction of the 61 Avenue S.W. pedestrian bridge. This iconic landmark leads to one of the main entry points at CF Chinook Centre, which draws 14.8 million visitors per year. The opening of this bridge represents the vision that both The City of Calgary and CF share, which is to help create a vibrant and safe community for all Calgarians to enjoy.

“The opening of the new pedestrian bridge marks a significant milestone for Cadillac Fairview and further exemplifies our dedication to providing a premium shopping experience in the community, as well as our continued investment in the city of Calgary,” says Paige O’Neill, General Manager, CF Chinook Centre.

Acting Director of City of Calgary’s Transportation Infrastructure Department, Kerensa Fromherz, elaborates: “It’s been a big year for us. This is one of 21 transportation projects that make up a $400 million investment to help manage traffic and help people move around our city.”

Environment Canada is calling for cool, high winds overnight followed by approximately 10 cms of snow in the Calgary area throughout the day Monday.

“In anticipation of high winds and heavy snowfall overnight and tomorrow, we have additional trucks and staff on stand-by,” says Roads Maintenance Manager Bill Biensch. “Significant amounts of snow falling within a short period could result in accumulation on the roads. But the warm road temperatures and mild weather, should make this a relatively easy clean-up if the rain does turn to snow.”

The City’s Snow and Ice Control (SNIC) program plan is organized months before the winter season to account for a variety of weather conditions. Under the plan, crews sand, salt and plow roads and sidewalks based on a Council-approved priority system - the more traffic there is on a roadway, the higher the priority.

“This will keep the greatest number of commuters, moving quickly and safely,” says Biensch.

While City crews are prepared, the first snowfall of the season always seems to catch people a little off-guard. For this reason, The City is reminding drivers to prepare for a potentially slower commute tomorrow morning. “Give yourself a little bit of extra time, plan for delays, slow down and drive to conditions,” adds Biensch.

Crews will also be ready to help clean-up any tree debris and leaves left on public walkways and roads, and The City reminds citizens to lookout for these hazards.

Approved in 2016, Calgary’s pedestrian strategy includes 49 actions to help make Calgary safer, more comfortable, and interesting for walking. Some of the actions identified are already underway, including:

• Improving intersections with the installation of 75 new Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons.
• Building missing sidewalk and pathway connections near schools and transit stations.
• Launch of the ActivateYYC microgrant program to help citizens to initiate 150 walkability projects in their communities.
