Celebrate International Migratory Bird Day with City of Calgary Parks
Calgary, AB – Sunday, May 11th marks The City of Calgary Parks annual celebration of International Migratory Bird Day. Celebrate Mother’s Day with the family at the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary and take the opportunity to learn about the epic journey birds have taken to return to Calgary.
“This special day is a celebration not only of bird migration, but also the importance of birds to our environment,” says Jennifer Makar, Education Coordinator for Parks. “This year’s theme is ‘Why Birds Matter’. Activities at the event will help visitors understand that birds are an integral part of every ecosystem and without them, our world would be a very different place!”
Each spring, millions of birds return to Alberta from their wintering grounds in Latin America and the Caribbean. The Sanctuary is a rest stop for thousands of these birds. International Migratory Bird Day is a conservation initiative that brings awareness to migratory birds and their habitats throughout the Western Hemisphere.
Join us for guided tours, interactive nature games, local musicians, kids’ crafts, and refreshments. The Alberta Institute for Wildlife Conservation will also have brief presentations about the different types of birds of prey and migratory birds in Calgary. Special guest Griffin, a red-tailed hawk, will accompany the presentation.
This free event is open to all ages from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 11th at the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary (2425 – 9 Ave. S.E.).
