UPDATE - CP Rail/Bonnybrook Rail incident

The Calgary Fire Department, Calgary Police Service and Emergency Medical Services remain on scene at the structural failure of a rail bridge over the Bow River. The safety and security of the public and first responders is our first priority.

 

The half-mile evacuation zone around the rail bridge is being reduced. Effective immediately, access is now restricted to within 300 metres of the derailment. No residences were located within the evacuation zone; however a number of businesses were affected.

 

There are six cars on the damaged bridge. One of these cars is empty and the other five contain petroleum-based materials. The cars on the damaged bridge have been secured. They have been coupled with another train of cars filled with grain and rock to anchor the cars in place. Each of the six cars has been tethered together and to the anchoring train. Work will begin shortly with vacuum trucks to transfer the petroleum-based material from the cars on the damaged bridge to rail cars on the adjacent undamaged bridge.

 

Deerfoot Trail and Barlow Trail are now open in both directions. 50 Avenue SE is also now open. Ogden Road remains closed north of 50 Avenue and 17 Street SE.
