Three People Escape North West Fire

Firefighters responded to a report of a fire on the 8900 block of 34 avenue NW. Crews arrived to find three adults outside a fourplex saying their lower level unit was on fire. Crews entered the suite and quickly brought the fire under control. The entire fourplex was searched and evacuated by firefighters. The unit above the fire is occupied but no one was home at the time of the fire. Two people were home in the units next to the fire and evacuated as a precaution. Those units were not damaged. An adult male in the fire unit heard the fire and alerted the other two occupants. The suite was equipped with a smoke detector that did not sound due to a dead battery. Smoke detectors should be inspected regularly and batteries changed twice a year. The detectors should be replaced every ten years. In this case the occupants were luck to have discovered the fire. The cause is now under investigation. The Red Cross is assisting the occupants with alternative accommodation.
