The City of Calgary Parks to host open house on proposed changes to Bowmont Park

Calgary, AB - The City of Calgary Parks will host an open house Wednesday, May 22 to inform Calgarians about off-leash boundary changes in Bowmont Park and to gather public feedback on design concepts for the development of the east end of the park. These initiatives represent two separate projects occurring within the park.

“Parks will present preliminary design concepts for the area located in and around the former Klippert gravel pit,” said Chris Manderson, Parks Natural Areas Management Lead. “The concepts are based on public and stakeholder input that was gathered over the course of several months.”

Information about changes to the off-leash area boundary will also be made available. Changes align with the Council-approved Off-leash Area Management Plan that sets out consistent, city-wide guidelines for these areas.

The public will have several opportunities to provide comments on either of these projects - at the open house and through an online survey that will be posted on calgary.ca starting May 23rd. The information presented at the open house and the survey results will also be posted on calgary.ca.

“The Off-Leash Area Management Plan outlines specific criteria to protect sensitive natural areas,” said Manderson. “At the same time, Parks recognizes the value that Calgarians place on off-leash areas. The proposed changes to off-leash boundaries are intended to better protect sensitive habitats and to also make the boundaries more clear to the park user through better signs and sight lines. While some space was removed to protect the natural area, additional space was added in less sensitive locations within the park.”

City staff will be on hand to inform Calgarians about the boundary changes and to answer questions. The open house is a drop-in event from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Bowness Community Centre and Arena located at 7904 43 Ave. N.W.
