The 2013 Calgary Flood, a year later: public commemoration event

It is less than one month until the anniversary of the 2013 June flood—the worst natural disaster in our city’s modern history. The City of Calgary will recognize this milestone with a public commemoration ceremony on Friday, June 20, 2014.

“This is an opportunity for sombre reflection on the floods that struck Calgary and the continued impact on many in our community,” said Mayor Naheed Nenshi. “It’s important to acknowledge the flood anniversary, while we continue to move onward, working together to rebuild and recover.”

The 2013 Flood Commemoration Ceremony will include special guests and dignitaries reflecting upon the impact of the flood to our city and citizens. It will also feature the unveiling of a legacy display and the Kids’ Flood Art Call Out from earlier this year.

The Ceremony will take place in the Atrium of the Calgary Municipal Building, 800 Macleod Trail SE, beginning at 8:30 a.m. Please note, seating is limited, and will provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

“Everyone is welcome to the 2013 Flood Commemoration Ceremony,” said Mayor Nenshi. “Every Calgarian showed great compassion, resilience, and strength in the face of immense adversity, and we should honour that together.”
