The 2012 Calgary Awards honoured 16 recipients on June 12

The City of Calgary presented 16 awards to recipients at the 2012 Calgary Awards on Wednesday, June 12, 2013. Mayor Nenshi and Members of City Council recognized the recipients at the ceremony which was broadcasted live on Shaw TV.  Photos from the event are available on the Calgary Newsroom.

 

The Calgary Awards are presented each year by The City of Calgary to recognize deserving individuals, corporations, community groups, schools and organizations. “The Calgary Awards highlight the very best in citizenship in our city. I am proud of the individuals and organizations that make Calgary even better with their innovative and passionate contributions to our community, economy, and culture,” said Mayor Naheed Nenshi.

 

Citizen of the Year recipient Sheldon Kennedy said “I was shocked to hear I was receiving the Citizen of the Year Award and very grateful for such an honour. There are so many incredible people in Calgary who deserve this Award and I am humbled to be in their company.”

 

The Calgary Awards is The City’s official citizen recognition program celebrating Calgarians and local organizations for their outstanding achievements and significant contributions for improving the quality of life in Calgary.

The Environmental Achievement Awards - Recognizes environmental achievements in advanced technology, management, conservation, protection, enhancement, education, stewardship and promotion of the city’s environment.

 

Corporate – Avi Urban

Educational Institution – Calgary Board of Education: Waste Reduction Initiative

Individual – Ryan Scott

Not-For-Profit – Calgary Folk Music Festival

 

The Signature Award – Recognizes an outstanding individual who has brought significant recognition to Calgary.

 

Jean Grand-Maître

 

The City of Calgary W.O. Mitchell Book Prize – Recognizes literary achievement by a Calgary author.

 

Marcello Di Cintio  - “Walls: Travels Along the Barricades”  

 

The Award for Accessibility – Recognizes buildings or facilities that exceed minimum requirements for accessibility by persons with disabilities.
