Temporary closure within the Municipal Building, northeast corner

During some recent work being conducted in the northeast section of the Municipal Building a structural element, which appears to not meet building safety codes, was identified. The City does not believe that there is an immediate risk to the structural integrity of the northeast section.

However, out of an abundance of caution, and as part of The City’s commitment to employee safety, a temporary closure is in effect for the identified area. This closure includes floors eight through 12 in the northeast corner of the Municipal Building and the Administration Annex Building.

“The City holds itself to the same high standards it holds other building owners in regards to safety,” says Thomas Hansen, director of Facilities Management. “Safety is always top priority and while we investigate we want to ensure employees and members of the public visiting the Municipal Building that we are working to ensure it is safe.”

Those employees in the identified areas will be temporarily relocated while additional investigation occurs. This may take some considerable time. In addition to the contracted engineering firms’ work, safety codes officer have been inspecting the building and will continue this work throughout the coming weeks.

For those individuals visiting the rest of the Municipal Building, such as the Third Floor, this closure will not affect access.

“We thank everyone for their continued hard work and patience with this situation,” says Hansen. “As we know more it will be shared.”
