State of Local Emergency - Update 1:00 p.m., Sunday, June 23

The flood situation on the Bow and Elbow Rivers continues to improve, however The City of Calgary remains in local state of emergency. Safety is the number one priority for CEMA Calgary Emergency Management Agency (CEMA) and partner agencies.

Following that, our focus is getting people back into their homes and returning things to as normal as possible.

Re-entry (evacuation order lifted)

The mandatory evacuation order has been lifted for approximately 65, 000 people. As communities become safe and accessible, we are allowing residents to return home. Residents must visit a Re-entry Centre prior to attempting to returning home. We ask that residents of single family homes, self-assess the condition of their property and follow the safety precautions provided. Residents of multi-family dwellings are to connect with their property manager prior to returning home. We will continue to update those affected by the evacuation order throughout the day.

*Remember water and electricity don’t mix. Please follow these important re-entry safety tips & only attempt re-entry if the following criteria is met:

The road and sidewalk is dry
There is no flood water on entry
Inspect the basement for water. If there’s water above electrical outlets, leave the home immediately.

If all those criteria are met, proceed with the self-assessment. If you find issues, take a sheet of 8x10 paper and write as boldly as possible:

GAS NEEDED, for natural gas issues
ELECTRICITY NEEDED
WATER PUMPING NEEDED

Please use separate sheets of paper for each issue and tape them in your window. This will allow appropriate personnel to respond.

Getting around

Flooding continues to impact roads, bridges, signals, pathways and transit service. We ask that citizens avoid travel if possible to reduce traffic disruptions for essential emergency vehicles.

Water Conditions & River Levels

Calgary’s water quality remains good and tap water remains safe to drink. There is no need to boil water and treatment plants are fully operational, however we must all continue to conserve water.

Flow below Glenmore Dam was 224 CMS at 6:45 a.m., down from 255 CMS at 2:00 a.m. We believe the dam will stop overtopping sometime today (Sunday). Flows in the Bow River are down from Saturday and stable. Flows at Bearspaw Dam are 1220 CMS, up slightly from 1100 CMS at 2:00 a.m. The increase is the result of weather conditions upstream and some increased spillage from the upstream dams. Flow below the confluence is 1366 CMS, down significantly from the peak, but still extremely heavy.
