Smoke fills Southwest Calgary Apartment

This evening at 9:00 the Calgary Fire Department responded to the 500 block of 58 Avenue SW for reports of smoke in an apartment building.  Upon arrival Firefighters were met by a resident of the building who stated that there was smoke venting from a second floor window and that tenants were trapped in the stairwells.  Upon entering the building, Fire crews encountered smoke and immediately evacuated all tenants. After the evacuation was completed, crews entered a second floor suite and discovered a smouldering mattress in the bedroom. The smouldering fire was extinguished and then fire crews vented all remaining smoke and carbon monoxide from the building.  Approximately 25 residents were evacuated and temporarily housed in a neighbouring apartment complex.  Smoke and fire damage was confined to the suite of origin. All residents, except those from the damaged suite, have since reoccupied their homes. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Traffic in the area is currently unaffected.
