SERIOUS INJURY COLLISION 700 block, 68 Street SE
At 2110hrs on Saturday the 22nd of March 2014, a silver 2001 Honda Odyssey Minivan, was being driven southbound on 68th Street SE, Calgary.
At this time the vehicle was in the 700 block of 68 Street SE and approaching the marked crossing with the Canadian National Railway. The Crossing audible and visual warnings were functioning due to an approaching train comprising of 2 engines and 5 freight trucks. The Train was traveling from west to east as it entered the intersection.
The minivan continued south across the crossing and was struck by the train on the passenger side of the vehicle. The minivan then began to rotate around it’s vertical axis as it crossed the dividing median and struck one of the crossing signal poles before coming to rest on the east shoulder of 68 Street SE, facing west.
During the collision the front passenger of the minivan, a 22 year old male, received critical head injuries and was transported to the Foothills Medical Centre where he remained in critical condition. The driver, another 22 year old male, also sustained major injuries and was transported to the Foothills Medical Centre
The Calgary Police Service Traffic Section is investigating the incident. Failure of the minivan to obey the crossing signals is a factor in this collision. Speed or Alcohol is not considered a factor in this collision.
