Reminder: 17 Avenue S.W. scheduled for pavement rehabilitation

On Saturday, August 31 City of Calgary crews will begin the Surface Overlay Paving process on 17 Avenue S.W. from 35 Street S.W. to Sarcee Trail S.W. This work will last the entire long weekend, weather permitting, and require several road closures and lane restrictions.

Saturday, August 31: Westbound 17 Avenue S.W. between 35 Street and Sarcee Trail will be reduced to two lanes from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. with two-way traffic on the south side of the road.
- North and southbound traffic at 17 Avenue and 37 Street will be detoured from approximately 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. and
- North and southbound traffic at 17 Avenue and 45 Street will be detoured from approximately 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Sunday, September 1: Eastbound 17 Avenue S.W. between Sarcee Trail and 35 Street will be reduced to two lanes from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. with two-way traffic on the north side of the road.
- North and southbound traffic at 17 Avenue and 45 Street will be detoured from approximately 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and
- North and southbound traffic at 17 Avenue and 37 Street will be detoured from approximately 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Monday, September 2: 33 Street S.W. will be closed between 14 Avenue and 17 Avenue from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. with an additional closure on Spruce Drive S.W. from Bow Trail to 8 Avenue from approximately 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“No Parking” signs will be placed approximately 12 hours before parking restrictions begin. Transit routes along this road will maintain regular scheduled service during construction.

Regular maintenance and upgrading is an important part of improving the safety and extending the life-cycle of our roadways. When more extensive repair methods are required, pavement rehabilitation is carried out through pavement rehabilitation or the Surface Overlay Paving program.

Paving is prioritized based on specific guidelines for road conditions. Roads that experience high traffic volumes need proactive rehabilitation to maintain the safety of the road as well as increase its service life. Performing preventative construction can avoid hazards like potholes, cracks and frost heaves and lessen the need for continuous maintenance.
