One week until Canada Dayyc 2014
With only one week left until this year’s Canada Day celebrations, The City of Calgary is looking forward to hosting an expected 100,000 attendees.
“We have so much going on; it is hard to tell you about everything let alone suggest what to attend,” said Teresa Byrne, Superintendent, Event Services. “Families can choose to take part in the First Nation’s Powwow on Prince’s Island. It is a great opportunity to enjoy the pageantry of Canada’s aboriginal culture. We will also fly the Living Flag again this year which includes thousands of Calgarians, wearing red or white, in a pattern of the Canadian flag singing O Canada. It’s a wonderful sight and brings a real sense of national pride to our city.”
The day’s activities are designed to appeal to every age group and ability: the main stage will feature Canadian bands Mother Mother, Ridley Bent, Michael Bernard Fitzgerald and Scarlett Jane; almost 30 different food trucks will be out to offer a variety of gastronomic delights; and break dancers, spoken word performers and DJs will entertain crowds.
The day will wind up with a fireworks show presented by Hudson’s Bay starting at about 10:45 p.m. The fireworks will be launched from the Centre Street Bridge and 101.5 Kool FM and 95.3 The Peak will both be broadcasting music synchronized to the fireworks show.
Beyond these activities, The City of Calgary is partnering with several downtown organizations to present Chinatown Night Market, performances at the Chinese Cultural Centre, Downtown Calgary’s Biggest Birthday Party Ever, the East Village Street Fair and Fort Calgary’s pony rides and petting zoo.
With so many people expected to gather in the downtown core to celebrate Canada’s 147th birthday, organizers have arranged for extra bike racks and two free shuttle bus routes to transport citizens between various event locations. Various road and lane closures will be in effect along with parking bans in some areas, to safely accommodate the day and evening activities.
