Hit and Run Update Oct. 30, 2013

At approximately 19:40hrs on Thursday October 30th 2013, a fatal motor vehicle collision occurred in the 3800 block of 17th Avenue SW.

 

A 1997 green Dodge Neon was being operated eastbound along 17th Avenue SW in the 3900 block.  This vehicle lost control, crossed over the painted median and struck a 2011 black Jeep Grand Cherokee, which was westbound along 17th Avenue SW. The Dodge Neon struck the front of the Jeep Cherokee with its rear passenger side and then spun off the roadway and into a concrete wall bordering the LRT train lines.

 

The four occupants of the Jeep Cherokee, all females aged between 47 and 85, were taken to the Foothills Medical Centre for treatment and were later released.

 

Two people in the Neon, a 32 year old female and a 37 year old male, were pronounced deceased at the scene. A 35 year old male passenger was transported to the Foothills Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The 47 year old male driver was also transported from the scene in a life threatening condition.

 

Excessive Speed and Alcohol are believed to be factors in this collision.

 

 

***UPDATE***

 

On Sunday, February 23rd at approximately 12:15 pm, the driver of the Dodge Neon was arrested without incident.  It is anticipated that Joel Michael MATTESON, 47 years of age will be charged with the following:

 

  • 3 counts of Criminal Negligence Causing Death
  • 3 counts of Impaired Driving Causing Death
  • 3 counts of Operating a Motor Vehicle with a Blood Alcohol Concentration Greater than 80 milligrams of Alcohol in 100 millilitres of Blood causing death.
