Freezing rain impacts The City of Calgary

The Calgary Emergency Management Agency (CEMA) and its partners continue to monitor conditions after several events throughout the city related to this morning’s freezing rain had widespread impact. These events included power pole fires and power outages affecting traffic lights along with icy roads and motor vehicle collisions.

Numerous communities were without power this morning. ENMAX continues to work to restore power service to affected communities. Updates on power outage status can be found here.

Since 5:00 a.m. emergency crews have reported responses to 11 injury and numerous non-injury motor vehicle accidents.

The City of Calgary and its partner agencies worked quickly to respond to these events. Despite being extremely busy dealing with the effects of the freezing rain, City of Calgary business units and partners are returning to normal operations and they are continuing to respond. CEMA is monitoring events from the Emergency Operations Centre and is providing support as necessary.

The weather forecast is expected to improve shortly with rising temperatures, which will be beneficial in resolving current issues.
