These new four-car trains will make public transit better and more convenient for the thousands of commuters who use the CTrain every day.
First four-car “Mask” CTrain launched
The City of Calgary is pleased to announce its first four-car Mask CTrain is now in service.
The four-car S200 CTrain will carry up to 800 passengers per trip. These new cars are among the first of 63 new CTrain cars which are arriving on a regular basis as they come off the assembly line. They are expected to continue arriving into 2017.
“This is an exciting day for Calgarians,” said Mayor Naheed Nenshi. “These new trains are a huge step forward in comfort and convenience. You’ll notice the difference as soon as you step onboard.”
The new cars cost approximately $3.2 million each. The Government of Alberta provided $200 million in funding for the entire project; more than $133 million from the Green Transit Incentives Program (GreenTRIP) and nearly $67 million through the Municipal Sustainability Initiative.
“Calgary’s new CTrain cars are another example of the Government of Alberta’s commitment to supporting public transit across the province,” said Alberta Transportation Minister Brian Mason. “We are committed to partnering with municipalities to build sustainable, accessible, and affordable public transit that will help Albertans get to where they need to go.”
Funding of $51.3 million from the Government of Canada’s Building Canada Fund has allowed Calgary Transit to undertake a number of capital projects including a contribution of approximately $20 million for platform extensions, which are required to accommodate the longer trains.
“The Government of Canada understands the important role transit plays in getting Canadians to work or school on time and back home at the end of a long day,” said Darshan Singh Kang, Member of Parliament for Calgary Skyview, on behalf of the Honourable Amarjeet Sohi, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities. “These new four-car trains will make public transit better and more convenient for the thousands of commuters who use the CTrain every day.”
Calgary Transit is committed to improving the customer experience. The new four-car Mask trains are helping fulfil Calgary Transit’s new Customer Commitment to provide safe, reliable, and easy-to-use transit.
About 325,000 passengers are carried on the CTrain each week day, making it the most successful Light Rail Transit (LRT) system in North America.
