Electrical Fire in Downtown Highrise

Calgary Firefighters responded to an alarm call just before 5:00 pm this afternoon to a high rise residential tower located on the 300 block of 3rd street se. Upon arrival crews discovered that in fact two side by side towers were in alarm. Alarm panel information told the firefighters the problem was coming from an electrical vault outside the buildings. While investigating this other Firefighters searched the building looking for additional problems. During the investigation a fire was discovered in the electrical room of one of the towers. The fire was controlled by the building sprinkler system. Emergency crews from Enmax were called to the scene to insure the power supplying the build was cut so Firefighters could insure the fire had been completely extinguished. Once power had been cut and the fire completely out, efforts were began to restore power to the two towers and insure residents would be allowed to stay in the building. Emergency power has now been restored to both towers and crews continue to work toward bringing the full system back on line. Investigators are on scene to determine the cause of the fire. No injuries were reported.
