Committee endorses recommendations to ensure transparency in City’s potential bid for the 2026 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games

CALGARY – Today, the 2026 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (OPWG) Council Committee endorsed several key recommendations to help Council ensure transparency as Calgary continues to explore a potential bid for the 2026 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

“Today’s committee meeting marks a fresh start for this file,” says 2026 OPWG Committee Chair Evan Woolley. “After today’s briefing, I am confident that members of the Committee have a much clearer understanding of the work completed to-date and the work ahead, and I look forward to sharing this information with Council tomorrow.”

The Committee’s recommendations will be forwarded to Council as urgent business at tomorrow’s Strategic Meeting of Council. The 2026 OPWG Council Committee will be recommending to Council:

  • an updated Terms of Reference clarifying the Committee’s role

  • proposed Committee meeting agendas for the months of May and June

  • a streamlined project team governance structure

  • an update on the bid development work completed so far, including the budget spent to-date

Council will also discuss personnel matters, including the recruitment of the Chair of the Bid Corporation and an update on the membership of the Engagement Advisory Sub-committee.

“The items we reviewed today establish clear roles and responsibilities and clarify the decision making process for the Committee and Council moving forward,” says 2026 OPWG Committee Vice Chair Peter Demong. “We also have a much clearer line of sight as to what items will be coming forward to the Committee for discussion over the next several weeks, which will provide some stability to the work for Council.”

The 2026 OPWG recommendations will be forwarded to Council as urgent business at tomorrow’s Strategic Meeting of Council. The next meeting of the 2026 OPWG Council Committee will be held on May 29, 2018.
