Civic Census Online and Voter Registration 2017

Starting April 1, 2017, Calgarians will be able to complete their census online and register to vote at calgary.ca/census

Access codes are being mailed starting March 31 which can be used to complete the census online and voter registration between April 1 and April 21.

“As 2017 is an election year, we hope that all eligible voters will take advantage of the voter registration when they complete their census,” said Paul Denys, manager of Elections and Census. “The census online and voter registration is fast and simple to use.”

The census information is used by The City for planning services, such as roads, transit, recreation, and water services. It is also used by the public and separate school boards for enrolment predictions, decisions on future schools, and by the provincial government for determining per capita grant allocations where available.

“In the fall, Calgarians will vote for Mayor, Councillors, and School Board Trustees,” said Denys. “Registering to vote will make the voting process faster and easier for voters on Election Day.”

Voter registrations provide necessary information to Elections Calgary for planning purposes such as how many voters there are in each voting district. Voters who have registered will save time by having a pre-printed voter registration card when they visit their designated voting station on Election Day.

Access codes will be mailed to residents starting March 31. If anyone has technical difficulties, has lost their access code, or has questions about the census online or voter registration, they can call 403-476-4100 (option 3), Monday to Friday between 8 am and 8 pm, or Saturday and Sunday between 10 am and 4 pm (excluding holidays), for assistance. Or they can simply visit calgary.ca/census to request a new code.

Eligible voters who want to register to vote but have already completed their census can call 403-476-4100 (option 3) to register.

If residents are unable to complete their census or voter registration online, door-to-door census collection will begin on April 22, 2017. Once the collection period is over, if a dwelling is missed, residents can call 403-476-4100 (option 3) to provide their information over the phone.

All information provided during this process is confidential and secure. Census data is available on a city-wide basis or by geographic areas such as communities, never identifying individuals or single dwellings. The 2016 census results will be available approximately three months after census collection is complete.
