City crews prepare for overnight snow and ice

Environment Canada has issued a flash freeze warning for Calgary. In anticipation of a drastic drop in temperature this evening, City Roads crews are preparing Priority 1 routes and trouble spots, like hills and bridge decks, by applying an anti-icing agent throughout the day.

An estimated 2-4 centimetres of snow is expected to fall overnight and road temperatures will drop below -5 degrees so crews will put down a mix of salt and gravel to maintain priority routes.

While City crews are working hard to prepare for tonight’s forecast winter driving conditions will exist. Drivers are reminded to take the following precautions before heading out on the roads:

Tune up and winterize your vehicle.
Consider installing appropriate tires to the season.
Clean snow and ice off your vehicle and ensure your lights and your windows are clear.
Give yourself extra time to reach your destination.
Reduce your speed and turn on your headlights.
Drive defensively.
Leave extra distance between you and the car ahead of you.
When road conditions are difficult, consider using Calgary Transit.
Consider delaying your trip until the roads are in better condition.
