City announces participating sites for Doors Open YYC 2013

The City of Calgary is excited to announce 12 sites that will be participating in Doors Open YYC, 2013.
 
“Doors Open is a truly exciting way for Calgarians to experience their city” says Tim Mowrey with the City Clerks office. “And for us, it’s a great opportunity to open our doors and demonstrate our transparency, resiliency and innovation”
 
This free, three-day public event gives citizens exclusive, behind the scenes access to parts of the city that are often never seen. This year Calgarians of all ages will have access to 12 City sites in addition to a number of other facilities located throughout the city.
 
Citizens are invited to ride a car through the CTrain wash, watch Calgary firefighters use the ‘jaws of life’ and take exclusive tours through Calgary’s history.
 
“One of the sites we didn’t get last year but got this year is the Glenmore Water Treatment Plant” says Corinne Lyall, President, Doors Open Calgary Association (DOCA). “We think it’s going to be a huge draw.”
 
Doors Open events in other cities around the world have been very successful in building civic pride, creating enthusiasm for heritage and contemporary architecture and promoting public spaces that build a collective sense of community.
 
Events run from September 27-29. Some tours require pre-registration due to limited space and availability. Calgarians are encouraged to visit www.calgary.ca/doorsopen for full details.

  • The vision of Doors Open YYC is to foster civic pride through awareness, understanding, and appreciation of the value of the built environment in Calgary. Doors Open YYC recognizes Calgary’s rich heritage and explores how Calgary is becoming an ever-more vibrant and dynamic city. The event is planned and organized by the Doors Open Calgary Association, a registered non-profit organization with a volunteer board.   • Doors Open YYC 2013 will build on the success of the 2012 inaugural year, which showcased some of Calgary’s best arts and culture, sports and leisure, science and technology, and heritage buildings in all four quadrants of the city. With the support of more than 200 volunteers, the 35 sites drew 16,500 visits, over 10,000 more than the original goal of 6,000 site visits.
