City announces Glenmore Reservoir Regional Pathway Project

The City of Calgary is pleased to announce plans for a significant addition to the city’s extensive pathways and bikeways network along the crest of the Glenmore Reservoir. This “missing link” along the regional pathway will fulfill a 20-year vision to strengthen the connection of a continuous public pathway around the Glenmore Reservoir.  

 

Once completed, the new regional pathway link will provide all Calgarians with a major scenic resource and recreational amenity. The new pathway will include a three-metre-wide asphalt pathway connecting the existing pathway network in North Glenmore Park with the pathway network along the Glenmore Trail Causeway. Planning and design for this new pathway link will begin this year. Construction of the new regional pathway link is expected to begin in the fall of 2017.

 

“We are meeting the needs and desires of Calgarians by completing this missing link in the regional pathway,” says Anne Charlton, Director of Parks. “In addition to connecting pathways and communities, this new pathway will give our citizens the opportunity to connect with the landscape and the beauty of this important water resource within our city.”

 

Calgarians demonstrated the value they place on the regional pathway system and on Parks in general through comments provided in the 2012 Citizen Satisfaction Survey and a survey conducted for the imagineParks Plan 30 year vision. Citizens indicate high satisfaction with pathways and strong support for a well-connected pathway system.  The City’s pathways are used by 83 per cent of citizens for recreation and transportation.

 

Planning for the new pathway link has been identified and supported by City Council for almost 20 years. It fulfills a long-term vision identified in both Calgary’s Urban Park Master Plan and the Open Space Plan to strengthen the connection of a continuous public pathway around the Glenmore Reservoir. A portion of the existing regional and local pathways in North Glenmore Park will be realigned in spring 2013 to allow a small area of City parklands to be transferred to the Earl Grey Golf Club in exchange for the lands required for the development of this new pathway link. Pathway users can continue to use the pathway with no expected interruptions while work is underway this spring.
