Christmas tree recycling about to pick up

Calgary – It’s time to give your Christmas tree a fresh start for the New Year – as mulch.
 
On Tuesday, January 8, The City will start picking up real Christmas trees from homes with black cart garbage collection. Trees will be picked up over the next three weeks and recycled into mulch. 
 
Waste diversion specialist Lindsay Lofthouse stresses that it’s important to put your tree out in time for the start of collection. “We will be doing one sweep of the city starting at 7 a.m. on January 8. People should have their trees out by that time to ensure they won’t be missed.” Trees should be placed on the ground near your black cart collection spot. Make sure the tree is not blocking the street, lane or sidewalk and is at least a foot away from your carts. Leave it out and it will be collected within three weeks. 
 
If you don’t have black cart collection or want to get rid of your tree right away, you can drop it off at one of eight temporary locations until January 27: 
  • Fire Hall #15 - 6328 35th Ave. N.W.
  • Prairie Winds Park - 223 Castleridge Blvd. N.E.
  • Bottomlands Park - St. George’s Drive and Seventh Avenue N.E.
  • Marda Loop Communities Association - 3130 16th St. S.W.
  • Parks Compound - 10312 Sacramento Drive S.W.
  • Spyhill Landfill - 69th Street and 112th Avenue N.W.
  • East Calgary Landfill - 17th Avenue and 68th Street S.E.
  • Shepard Landfill - 114th Avenue and 68th Street S.E.
 
The Christmas Tree Recycling program is for real trees only. All ornaments, tinsel, lights and tree stands should be removed and trees should not be wrapped or bagged before being put out for collection. Trees, real or artificial, should never be placed in blue carts.  
 
Trees collected in the Christmas tree recycling program are mulched and made available to citizens for use in their own yards.
