Calgary Transit and Shaw Communications expand public Wi-Fi to CTrain stations in the downtown corridor

Calgary Transit, with Shaw Communications Inc., has announced six new locations for public Wi-Fi servicing CTrain stations within the downtown corridor. These locations include:

  • 3 Street
  • 4 Street
  • 6 Street
  • 7 Street
  • 8 Street
  • Downtown West – Kerby

“The success of public Wi-Fi at our stations at Chinook, Shaganappi Point, City Hall, Centre Street and First Street demonstrates that Calgarians find value in the service,” says Calgary Transit Director Doug Morgan. “Expanding public Wi-Fi to downtown CTrain stations is part of our Customer Commitment. It’s about investing in projects and initiatives that positively impact the customer experience.”

“Calgary is a connected community, and The City is committed to providing customers with access to online services and information,” says Heather Reed-Fenske, The City’s Chief Information Technology Officer. “Our partnership with Shaw Communications allows us to make this service available to all citizens using our facilities.”

Since the launch of public Wi-Fi in 2014, hundreds of thousands of residents and visitors to Calgary have enjoyed public Wi-Fi at City facilities. The most popular location, based on guest connections, is the City Hall CTrain Station, with over 36,000 users connecting to the ShawGuest hotspot per month.

“Calgarians love Wi-Fi and are using their personal devices to connect to the Internet while on-the-go more than ever before,” said Chris Kucharski, Senior Vice-President, Consumer, Shaw Communications. “We greatly value our relationship with The City of Calgary and are committed to working with them to provide high-quality Internet connectivity to Calgarians at the places they visit most often.”

The City of Calgary awarded Shaw Communications Inc. with the contract to provide public Wi-Fi at City-owned locations in December 2013. There are over 40 City facilities connected to public Wi-Fi including recreation centres, arenas, golf courses and CTrain stations. The service is available to any member of the general public and does not require a Shaw account. The City and Shaw Communications Inc. continue to work together to expand the public Wi-Fi service and provide Calgarians with greater access to technology and City services. Calgary Transit is committed to improving the customer experience through their Customer Commitment which aims to provide safe, reliable, helpful, informative, clean and easy-to-use transit.
