Calgary Drop-In and Rehabilitation Centre reopens

The Calgary Drop-In and Rehabilitation Centre is the first downtown shelter facility to be cleared as safe. Reoccupation of the Centre occurred earlier this afternoon.

The Drop-in Centre is the largest facility of its kind in Calgary and provides shelter and services to approximately 1,200 people.

The facility has been thoroughly assessed and cleaned and it has passed all inspections. Water and sewer services are operational. Gas has been restored. Electricity will be supplied by generators.

The Calgary Emergency Management Agency (CEMA) and partner agencies are working hard to reopen impacted downtown facilities that provide shelter and services to Calgary’s vulnerable citizens.

Patrons at these facilities require additional resources and support that is best offered in one location. Many of these patrons are currently being housed in reception centres and temporary facilities across the city where some of these resources are not available.

Assessment of the following downtown shelter facilities is underway:

Alpha House
Baker House
Edwards Place
George C. King Tower
Inn From The Cold
Louise Station Affordable Housing Tower
Murdoch Manor
Mustard Seed

More information on the condition of these facilities and potential re-occupancy will be known in coming days. Patrons should NOT return to these facilities until they have been cleared as safe for reoccupation.

A staggered approach to reopening and reoccupying these facilities will proceed on a building by building basis as waters recede and conditions are deemed safe.

No particular group or community is receiving preferential treatment. Facilities will be cleared and reoccupied based on building state of readiness.

CEMA and partner agencies are working hard to restore power and services to all Calgarians as soon as possible.
