Alpha House temporarily relocated to Planetarium

The City of Calgary is pleased to work with the Government of Alberta to provide interim support to Calgary Alpha House Society through temporary use of the Planetarium starting July 15.

 

The recent flood has impacted many individuals and groups, including Alpha House which runs programs and services for those whose lives are affected by alcohol and other drug dependencies. Their main building in Victoria Park received flood damage requiring three to six months of repair before it is fit for re-occupancy.

 

During these repairs, Alpha House was in need for a temporary location so they could continue to support their 24 hours a day, seven days a week services to their clients.

The Government of Alberta, which funds Alpha House through Alberta Human Services, has signed a temporary lease with The City to use part of the Planetarium. They have also been key in helping to finance and coordinate the relocation of Alpha House Society. 

 

The Planetarium, owned by The City, is currently unoccupied with the move of the TELUS World of Science to their new location at TELUS Spark. The City approved the use of and prepared the facility under the State of Local Emergency.

 

To help decide future arts, culture and/or heritage uses for this building, The City recently put a call out for interested non-profit groups and this temporary use of the facility is not expected to impact the process. The expressions of interest that have been submitted are currently being reviewed and a new use is not expected to be in place until 2014.
