46th Annual Pathway and River Cleanup

On Sunday, May 5, approximately 2,500 volunteers will pick up garbage along all major waterways and pathways in the city including the Bow and Elbow Rivers, Nose Creek, the Glenmore Reservoir and in communities.

 

This event is held each year to encourage Calgarians to care for our highly valued parks and open spaces. Last year, volunteers picked-up more than  10,000 lbs of litter from over 200 km of pathway.

Who:                    Mayor Nenshi will provide opening remarks

Where:                 Max Bell Arena #1, 1001 Barlow Trail S.E.

When:                  Sunday, May 5 at 8:30 a.m. (speeches from 9 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.)

 

A City of Calgary spokesperson will be available for interviews between 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. at this location, with a break for speeches. After the breakfast, volunteers in action can be filmed/photographed at various locations from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. along pathways and waterways including the Bow and Elbow Rivers, Nose Creek and the Glenmore Reservoir.

Who:                    Judges will determine the strangest and most unexpected find

Where:                 Wildlands parking lot (adjacent to Inglewood Bird Sanctuary) at 2221 – 9 Ave. S.E.

When:                  1:30 – 2 p.m.

 

This volunteer initiative is coordinated by The City of Calgary Parks, in conjunction with partners GLAD, Tim Hortons, Stantec Consulting Ltd, The Calgary Herald, Matrix Solutions Inc., RiverWatch Institute of Alberta and Green Calgary.

NOTE: In case of extremely inclement weather, accumulation of snow on the ground, or high water levels, the alternate cleanup date is Sunday, May 26. The breakfast will proceed on Sunday, May 5 rain or shine.
