3, 2, 1 Count Down! – City census and enumeration collection this April

Almost 900 census takers/enumerators started going door to door April 1 to collect census data and enumeration information.  All census takers/enumerators wear a photo identification badge issued by The City of Calgary.

 

Census takers/enumerators are gathering information on the total number of residents, home ownership, number of pre-school children and school system support. In addition, they will collect the names of eligible electors for the enumeration. Participation in the census and enumeration is important and will only take a couple of minutes.

 

New to this year, census takers/enumerators are collecting data on mobile tablet devices. These tablets allow information to be submitted live and increase efficient use of City resources. Mobile data collection offers benefits including improved data quality, overall cost savings, and sustainability and environmental improvements to the census taking process. Melanie Hulsker, Leader, Election and Census notes that “The transition to mobile collection presents us with an exciting opportunity to monitor data collection live as it occurs allowing us to improve data quality on the spot.”

 

If residents are not home at the time of visit, the census/enumerator will leave a notice of Municipal Census Call. Residents are asked to call the census taker/enumerator at the number provided on the notice to complete their census and enumeration. If residents are missed during the collection period, they are asked to call the Election and Information Services office at 403-476-4100 (option 3) to provide their information over the phone.

 

Census data is very important to The City of Calgary for use in making informed and appropriate decisions on population-based City services, such as transportation, roads, transit, police and fire services, recreation, etc. This information is also used by the public and separate school boards for enrolment predictions, decisions on future schools, and by the provincial government for determining per capita grants, if they are available. Enumeration information is essential to assist in planning the general election and to improve service for voters on Election Day.

 

All Census and Enumeration information you provide is secure. Census data is released for geographic areas the size of a community or larger. This ensures that no individual or dwelling is identifiable. Enumeration information is used only for the purposes of planning and administering civic elections.
