The City prepares for snow

Environment Canada has called for a severe snowfall warning in Calgary with 25 to 30 cm of snow forecasted to fall this evening and continue overnight and through to Tuesday. The City of Calgary is taking proactive steps to help commuters. 

Even before the snowfall begins, City crews are applying an anti-icing agent on known trouble spots as a preventive measure on ice build up. These areas include bridge decks and hills throughout the city. With road temperatures currently at about -5C, salt is being spread on the roads. As snow begins to accumulate crews will plow, as necessary, focussing on Priority 1 routes, these are the major roadways that carry more than 20,000 vehicles per day. Additional crews have been called in overnight to help manage the  snow and to ensure the safest commute possible for Calgarians tomorrow morning.

As The City prepares, you can too. Drivers are reminded to drive according to conditions and to take the following steps before beginning their commute:

• Clean snow and ice off your vehicle to ensure your lights and your windows are clear.
• Give yourself extra time to reach your destination.
• Reduce your speed and turn on your headlights.
• Drive defensively.
• Leave extra distance between you and the car ahead of you.
• When road conditions are difficult consider using Calgary Transit.
• Consider delaying your trip until the roads are in better condition.
