Teens Charged in Case of Discarded Ashes

Three female teens have been charged in a case of a car prowling that led to the ashes of a family member being dumped on a city street this past summer.

Sometime in the early morning hours of Friday, Aug. 2, 2013, police were called to the area of 10 Street S.E. and Wapta Rise S.E. for reports of car prowlings. A variety of vehicles along the street had been targeted and a number of items were taken.

A white truck was among the targeted vehicles. Nothing of monetary value was stolen from within the truck, however a green velvet pouch was taken containing the ashes of the victim’s late 19-year-old daughter who passed away four years earlier from a vehicle collision. The ashes were dumped on the pavement and the pouch tossed to the side.  A small amount of the ashes were recovered, however, due to rain during the early morning hours, the majority were washed away.

A 15 year old and a 13 year old have both been charged with theft under $5,000, and another 15-year-old has been charged with both theft under $5,000 and property damage. Due to the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, they cannot be named.
