Stephen Avenue Mall concrete and roadway refurbishment begins

The City of Calgary Transportation department has begun the process of rehabilitating the road surface along Stephen Avenue Mall (8 Avenue) between 1 Street S.E. and 3 Street S.W. This concrete work is being completed as part of The City’s regular sidewalk repair, maintenance and rehabilitation.

 

The initial phase, which began in mid-May, focuses on repairing concrete along the roadway of Stephen Avenue Mall, between 1 Street S.E. and 3 Street S.W. This work involves removing deteriorated concrete and brick and replacing it with new concrete. The work will first take place on the roadway and later shift to the parking lane. Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout construction.

 

The second phase of this project focuses on roadway repairs to the intersections along the mall. This work will replace deteriorated brick, asphalt and concrete with a new asphalt road surface. This work will begin in mid-July and take place during weekends in order to mitigate its impact on traffic.

 

Because of the nature of this work, scheduling cannot be pinpointed to specific dates. The work is being divided into two phases so it does not interfere with the peak of tourism season. The initial phase of the Stephen Avenue Mall road concrete rehabilitation will occur from mid May to the end of June. Construction will pause until mid or late July to allow for the festival season and then will resume for the completion of the work on the intersections.

 

This work will have various impacts on special events but accommodations are being made to facilitate parades routes.
