State of Local Emergency – Update 8 p.m., Sunday, June 23
The flood situation on the Bow and Elbow Rivers has been consistent throughout the day, and Calgary remains in a state of local emergency. Safety is the number one priority for Calgary Emergency Management Agency (CEMA) and partner agencies as residents return to their homes.
Re-entry - evacuation orders lifted
Clearance to return home was issued today to 65,000 residents.
Please note sanitary services are not operational in portions of Bowness, Sunnyside and Elbow Park. Residents in these areas will not be able to flush toilets, shower or do laundry. The City is working to restore the service but the timeline is not known. The City will continue to share information as it becomes available through public channels and on calgary.ca.
Residents must visit a re-entry information centre for guidance on doing a home assessment prior to accessing their home. Please visit Calgary.ca for re-entry site locations. Centres will be open 8 am to 11 p.m. until further notice.
City staff and other resources as required will be available in communities to support residents with questions.
Parts of some communities remain closed due to water levels: Bowness, Elbow Park, Erlton, Mission, Stanley Park / Elboya and Sunnyside. The communities of Inglewood, Chinatown, East Village, Victoria Park, Connaught and parts of downtown remain closed.
Clean-up
Waste & Recycling Services has taken a number of steps to facilitate cleanup including extending landfill hours and placement of dumpsters at re-entry information centres for disposal of food items. As well, residents can leave large items on their front lawn for collection.
Downtown property assessment
Assessment of buildings in a portion of the downtown core began today to determine if buildings are safe for reopening and occupation. The assessment work underway focuses on buildings north of 17 Avenue S.W. Please note this area remains closed to the public at this time.
Getting around
Flooding continues to impact roads, bridges, signals, pathways and transit service. We ask that citizens avoid travel if possible to reduce traffic disruptions for essential emergency vehicles.

Water Conditions & River Levels
Calgary’s water quality remains good and tap water remains safe to drink. There is no need to boil water and treatment plants are fully operational, however we must all continue to conserve water.
Flows on the Elbow River are in the 225 CMS range, with Bow River flows of 1220 CMS at Bearspaw Dam and 1365 CMS at the confluence of the rivers.
City Employees
City of Calgary employees who work in the following City facilities will need to make alternate work arrangements for tomorrow:
- Municipal Complex (including Historic City Hall)
- Public Building
- Andrew Davison Building
- Alberta Trade Centre
