State of Local Emergency - Update 5 a.m., Monday, June 24

The City of Calgary remains in a state of local emergency due to significant flooding. Safety remains the number one priority for the Calgary Emergency Management Agency (CEMA) and partner agencies.

Citizens are advised to stay out of the downtown core Monday and Tuesday to allow the clean-up work to continue. Building owners and property managers ARE being asked to enter the downtown core area to conduct assessments on their properties. Once building assessments are complete and power restored, final evaluations will be done by City resources before the building and/or area can be fully opened to the public.

Residents who have returned home need to exercise caution with water and electricity, and with carbon monoxide if they are running pumps or generators. Residents must visit a re-entry information centre for guidance on doing a home assessment prior to accessing their home. Please visit Calgary.ca for re-entry site locations. Centres will be open 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. until further notice.

As The City continues to recover from the flood we are beginning to get both our essential and non-essential services back up and running.

At present, the status of the following services is known:

Parking:

The City of Calgary has suspended parking restrictions in the affected areas during the state of local emergency. If a citizen receives a parking ticket during this time please refer to the appeal process to deal with this. While parking restrictions have been suspended, citizens still need to park in a safe and legal manner.

Transit:

Calgary Transit has been able to restore about 80 per cent of its service. The City is working hard to get LRT service back to the downtown from the NE, NW and West within the next few days. The south line needs repairs and it’s unknown right now when it will be running so bus service will be in place from the South for Monday. Calgarians are encouraged to work from home, walk or cycle.
June low income transit passes and senior passes have been extended to July 15 as the two downtown service counters are closed.

Municipal Building Customer Counters:

Due to the closure of the Municipal Building , The City is working to set up Service Counters at other locations throughout the city. These counters will offer similar services to those usually offered at the Municipal Building. (e.g.: planning services, utilities and property taxes.). Specific locations to be confirmed soon.

Recreation:

All Recreation facilities are open with the exception of Beltline Pool and Inglewood Pool. Southland and Village Square Leisure Centres are also closed as they continue to serve as reception centers.

CITYonline:

CITYonline Service at cityonline.calgary.ca is operational, including mapping and downloadable products. Delivery of any physical products such as recreation passes and Calgary transit tickets is temporarily suspended until further notice. Customers with orders impacted by this disruption will receive a full refund.

Waste and recycling services:

City-wide blue bin pick-up is suspended until further notice. Please store recyclable materials until collection resumes or take recyclables to the community recycling depots if necessary.
Other residential collection service will continue on your usual collection day in communities not impacted by flooding. Only materials in carts will be collected. No materials outside the carts will be collected.
Garbage trucks and dumpsters are available in areas affected by the flood and starting June 24. Residents in affected communities can leave large items and garbage bags on their front lawn for collection. If leaving appliances such as fridges and freezers please remove the appliance door or wrap securely closed for safety.
