Roads Crews Fight the Flurries

Snow is upon us once again with forecasts calling for an estimated 12 to 20 centimetres of the white stuff to fall over the next day and a half. Approximately four centimetres of snow is forecasted today with over five centimetres forecasted for tonight. The snow will continue into Thursday with almost eight centimetres forecasted to fall.

City forces, armed with equipment, are out in full force tackling another dump of snow. Crews were out last night spreading salt on Priority 1 and 2 routes, as well as trouble spots like bridge decks, hills, and on and off ramps to help prevent ice from forming on roadways. At this time, Priority 1 routes are bare and wet and Priority 2 routes are partially bare with a skiff of snow on most surfaces. Roads Crews will continue to maintain roads according to the Council approved Seven Day Plan.

Drivers are reminded to drive according to winter conditions and to take the following steps before beginning their commute:

  • Clean snow and ice off your vehicle and ensure your lights and your windows are clear.
  • Give yourself extra time to reach your destination.
  • Reduce your speed and turn on your headlights.
  • Drive defensively.
  • Leave extra distance between you and the car ahead of you.
  • Fill up your windshield washer fluid.
  • When road conditions are difficult, consider using Calgary Transit.
  • Consider delaying your trip until the roads are in better condition.

Residents are reminded to clear snow and ice off of their sidewalks. Snow and ice must be removed from city sidewalks within 24 hours of the snow stopping. The City of Calgary encourages citizens to become “Snow Angels” and adopt the sidewalk of older Calgarians and residents in need of help to shovel when the snow falls.
