Nighttime Break-ins
The Calgary Police Service is investigating several nighttime break and enters in south Calgary.
On Friday, Jan. 24, 2014, five separate residential break and enters occurred overnight in the communities of Evergreen, New Brighton and Walden.
During these incidents, the homeowners were inside the residences when the offences took place. Suspect(s) gained entry into the residences by cutting the window screens and then entering through unlocked windows, then proceeded to steal personal items such as cellphones, keys, wallets, purses, and small electronics.
In one case, the lone female homeowner was asleep on the main floor couch when she awoke and confronted one of the suspects carrying a flashlight.
In another incident, suspect(s) removed vehicle keys from inside the home and attempted to steal the victim’s truck while the family was sleeping.
In the community of Evergreen, a witness noticed two men in a suspicious white or cream-coloured SUV, similar to a Jeep Compass, in the area prior to one of the incidents.
Residents should always ensure windows are locked and secured, as the outside screen can be easily removed in most residential homes.
These incidents can occur anywhere in the city, however, recent trends over the last 24 hours have been noticed in south Calgary.
The Service is investigating all avenues, and is seeking assistance from anyone with information.
Calgarians are reminded to lock vehicle doors, whether they are parked on the street or garage, and to ensure all doors and windows to the residence and garage are closed and locked.
Don’t leave items in plain view in your vehicle and remove your garage door remote. Consider installing an aftermarket car alarm if your vehicle is not already equipped with one.
